The Niels Bohr Library is part of the Center for History of Physics of the American Institute of Physics. Its primary mission is to preserve and make known the history of modern physics and allied sciences. The photograph collection is named in honor of Emilio Segrè, best known for his Nobel Prize-winning work in nuclear and high-energy physics, but also an avid photographer and author of books on the history of modern physics.

Title:
Aage Bohr papers, 1950-1993.
Papers document Aage Bohr's personal research as well as the development of the Niels Bohr Institute, a world center for nuclear physics, as well as other areas of theoretical physics. The correspondence, which comprises the bulk of the papers, covers the period 1950-1980, and includes in-coming as well as out-going letters. There are about 3100 correspondents, of which about 600 are considered to be of special importance. It includes material on the Institute's connections with Eastern, particularly Soviet and Chinese, physics and physicists at a time when East-West relations were practically blocked. Addition of 19 boxes contains scientific and administrative correspondence from 1981-1993 (8 boxes), and materials regarding funding and international cooperation, particularly with Eastern Bloc countries from 1965-1980 (11 boxes).

Rosenfeld, L. (Leon), 1904-1974. Oral history interview with Leon Rosenfeld, 1968 September 3.
Title:
Oral history interview with Leon Rosenfeld, 1968 September 3.
Origins of interest in nuclear physics when George Gamow came to Göttingen and wrote his alpha radioactivity paper. Assisted Max Born with his treatise on quantum mechanics. Worked with Wolfgang Pauli in Zurich on quantum electrodynamics. Half-year in 1930 in Copenhagen working with Niels Bohr. Arrangement lasted until the war when Rosenfeld was called home. War years in Utrecht, Holland. Lived for the next 11 years (until 1958) in England. Topics discussed include 1931 Rome meeting; the reaction at Copenhagen when Bohr received Ernest Rutherford's letter announcing the discovery of the neutron; Werner Heisenberg's three papers on nuclear structure; a colloquium at Copenhagen on the Enrico Fermi experiments; attendance at the 1934 Kharkov conference; the large-scale exodus of German physicists because of the coming to power of Adolf Hitler; and Bohr's assistance in the emigration of refugees. He shows how physicists themselves recognized the significance of what they were doing, and uses of, for examples, the discovery of the neutron, the compound nucleus, the neutrino idea, the positron, the Hideki Yukawa prediction, and fission. Also prominently mentioned are: Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett, James Chadwick, John Cockcroft, Otto Robert Frisch, Fritz G. Houtermans, Dmitriy Dmitrevich Ivanenko, Lev Davidovich Landau, Rudolph Leo Bernhard Minkowski, Karl Scheel, Eugene Paul Wigner; Conference on Nuclear Physics (1931 : Rome, Italy), Conference on Theoretical Physics (1934 : London, England), Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zurich, Institute for Theoretical Physics (Copenhagen), Kharkov Conference (1934 : Kharkov, USSR), Niels Bohr Institutet, and University of Manchester.

Title:
Oral history interview with Hilde Levi, 1971 October 28.
Graduate studies in Berlin in the early 1930s with Beutler; Ph.D. in molecular spectroscopy, 1934. Contacts in Denmark lead to stay at Niels Bohr Institutet as James Franck's assistant working on photo-synthesis, 1934-1935. Levi changes fields after Franck leaves and Otto Frisch and Georg von Hevesy arrive: she builds Geiger counters with Frisch, then works with Hevesy on induced radiation experiments. Lengthy discussion of how Hevesy's active work style and inspiring attitude engaged people at many different institutions, including herself. Collaborations among Bohr's Institute and other groups, e.g. Enrico Fermi's Institute in Rome, August Krogh Institute, and the Finsen Institute. Anecdotes about Bohr and Hevesy; an account of the beryllium sources handmade by Frisch and Levi. Levi's work in Sweden at the Wenner-Gren Center Foundation during World War II. Discussion of Bohr, Krogh, and Paul Bergst as leaders.

Title:
Records of Elmer Hutchisson, 1948-1966, (bulk 1957-1964)
Correspondence; reports; printed matter; memoranda; grant proposals; drafts of articles; speeches; minutes of meetings. The records of Hutchisson, director of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) (1957-1964) are primarily from his tenure as director, a period of enormous growth at the AIP with the initiation of the Education Department, the history of physics project, the Documentation Research Project, and a major increase in journal publication, particularly Soviet translation journals. The collection focuses on the areas of Hutchisson's particular interests: science education including various projects to improve physics teaching at all levels and increase the public understanding of physics; physics history including the creation of the Niels Bohr Library; journal publication including internal examination of publishing procedures at AIP, and an evaluation of SCIENCE ABSTRACTS. The largest series reflects Hutchisson's activities in the scientific community at large with correspondence discussing educational and scientific legislation and funding, and international cooperation on scientific matters. Other material concerns AIP awards, organizational structure and operations with coverage of the revision of the constitution and bylaws to create associate member society status and of the physical expansion at the new headquarters; public relations activities with press releases and files on seminars for science writers; the development of citation indexing; and the placement of physics graduates. Files of the Member Societies: Acoustical Society of America, American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), American Physical Society (APS), Optical Society of America, and Society of Rheology, are mostly informational copies, although the APS and AAPT files contain some substantive correspondence. Also contains speeches, reprints, personal correspondence, and correspondence concerning Hutchisson's involvement with the AIP in capacities other than director. Correspondents include: Henry A. Barton, W. Kenneth Brasher. Ferdinand G. Brickwedde, Karl K. Darrow, John Henry Dillon, George F. Gainsborough, Grant O. Gale, Conyers Herring, William C. Kelly, W. James King, Robert E. Maizell, Thomas Harris Osgood, Shirley Leon Quimby, Norman Foster Ramsey, Raymond John Seeger, Frederick Seitz, Wallace Waterfall, Robert T. Webber, and Hugh Wolfe.
