William von Arx was a physical oceanographer with degrees in geology and geophysics. His research involved circulation of oceans and atmosphere, heat balance of the earth, physical geodesy of ocean areas and clouds. Later interests included world energy problems and techniques to collect and store solar heat. He was a participant in Henry Stetson's Project 19, Operation Crossroads and Project I-88 (Barataria Bay).
