American physicist and rocketry pioneer (elaborated the fundamental theory of rocket flight, 1914-1916; built 2-stage solid fuel rocket, 1914; developed rocket engine fueled with gasoline and liquid oxygen, 1923; launched first liquid fuel rocket (4 feet high, 6 inches diameter), 1926; launched first rocket to carry instruments (barometer, thermometer, camera), 1929; engaged in rocket research for reaching high altitudes, developed self-cooling combustion chambers, first automatic steering systems, multistage rockets, 1924-1942; designed small rockets to help Navy airplaines take off from carriers during World War II; holder of 214 patents in rocketry).
