Biography
Herbert P. Broida was born in Aurora, Colorado in 1920. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1944, and began graduate work at Harvard. During World War II he taught science at Wesleyan University to military students, then returned to Harvard, obtaining his Masters in 1945 and his Ph.D. in physics in 1949. In the 1950s he did extensive research and work for the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), and in 1963 he joined the physics faculty at UCSB. He was instrumental in the creation of the UCSB Quantum Institute and was director from 1973 to 1978. Broida was an active member of many scientific organizations. He died in Santa Barbara in 1978.
