Writer, politician and financier, of Pennsylvania.
José Francisco Correia da Serra was a Portuguese scholar, naturalist and diplomat.
William Clark requested that Nicholas Biddle, scholar, statesman, and financier, write a narrative of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was published in 1814 as "History of the Expedition of Captains Lewis and Clark."
Nicholas Biddle, litterateur and financier of Philadelphia, attended Princeton and served as: secretary to American Legation in Paris; editor of the "Port Folio;" member of the Pensylvania state legislature; and president of the Bank of the United States. After leaving the Bank of the United States, Biddle lived as a retired gentleman at Andalusia, his country estate.
Born and died in Philadelphia. Financier; president of the Bank of the United States.
President of the Second Bank of the United States.
Nicholas Biddle was a scholar, statesman, and financier. He was requested by William Clark to write a narrative of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was published in 1814 as "History of the Expedition of Captains Lewis and Clark."
Banker, diplomat, editor, lawyer, and legislator.
Financier.
Nicholas Biddle, banker and president of Second Bank of the United States, was born in Philadelphia. Biddle was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1814, and in 1819 appointed director of the Second Bank of the United States, where he served until the federal charter expired in 1836. Biddle served as president of the United States Bank of Pennsylvania until 1839.
Nicholas Biddle was a litterateur, a scholar, a statesman, and a financier. At the age of ten he entered the University of Pennsylvania and was ready to graduate at thirteen, however, he was not allowed to receive his degree because of his youth. He then entered the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1799, and graduated in 1801 as valedictorian. Although he was devoted to the study of the classics, he selected the law as his profession. He was a contributing writer to the PORT FOLIO, which became the leading literary periodical in America, and became its editor in 1812. In 1810, after the death of Capt. Meriwether Lewis, Gen. William Clark asked Biddle to write the narrative of their expedition into the Louisiana country, which Biddle worked on from 1810 to 1812. He entered the state Senate in 1814 which forced him to give up his post as editor, and turn over the work of carrying through the press his HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION OF CAPTAINS LEWIS AND CLARK (1814) to Paul Allen. In 1819 Biddle became one of the five government directors of the Bank of the United States, and its president in 1822. He resigned in 1839, and retired to "Andalusia" on the Delaware, which became the scene of an intellectual and social life not common in the United States.
Philadelphia banker.
Philadelphia lawyer, statesman, financier; president of the second Bank of the United States, 1822-1836.

Title:
Letters, 1819-1852 (inclusive), 1819-1831, 1852 (bulk).
Letters to Samuel D. Ingham, many of which were written during the first two years of the Andrew Jackson administration, 1829-1831, while Dallas was U.S. District Attorney at Philadelphia and Ingham was Secretary of the Treasury. They concern financial difficulties, political patronage recommendations, and running commentary, at times in code, on political affairs and personalities in Pennsylvania and the nation. Principle issues discussed are the tariff, nullification, the Bank of the United States, and the Margaret (Peggy O'Neale) Eaton affair which led to the resignation of Ingham. There is a long letter, September 17, 1829, which Ingham, in slightly revised form, used as the administration reply to Nicholas Biddle in an argument about the Bank of the United States.

Colt, Roswell L. (Roswell Lyman), 1779-1856. Papers, 1808-1854.
Title:
Papers, 1808-1854.
These papers consist primarily of business, political, and social correspondence of Roswell L. Colt of Paterson, N.J. The material reflects Colt's penchant for speculation in lands in Oneida, N.Y., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and western property, as well as coal, iron, canals, and railroads. His debts to the Bank of the U. S. and the estate of his father-in-law are also treated. There is evidence of Colt's position as financial advisor to his brother, John M. Colt, textile manufacturer, his cousin Samuel Colt, arms manufacturer, Nicholas Biddle, and Daniel Webster. American politics are frequent topics in the letters. Toward the end of Colt's life, much of the correspondence concerns his agricultural and horticultural interests. Correspondents include: Nicholas Biddle, Richard M. Blatchford, John W. Bloomfield, William A. Bradley, John M. Colt, Samuel Colt, Herman P. Cope, John Devereux, R. M. Gibbes, D. M. Perine, Daniel Webster, and various members of the Hone Club of New York. There are also some bills, reciepts, and other miscellaneous papers.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

Tazewell family. Papers, 1756-1931.
Title:
Papers, 1756-1931.
The papers of Henry Tazewell (1753-1799) and Littleton Waller Tazewell (1774-1860) constitute the majority of the records in this collection. Though numerous receipts and vouchers are included, the extensive number and range of more important papers reflect the prominence of the Tazewell family in Virginia's history. The earliest Tazewell papers are chiefly wills and legal papers relating to land titles, many of them copies, but filed under the original date. From 1762-1799, letters are interspersed with legal documents and business papers relating to the Tazewell's of their clients. From 1800-1859, the papers are chiefly those of Littleton Waller Tazewell or his son, John Nivison Tazewell. Correspondence between members of the family illustrates the life of an upper class Virginia family of the period, with a great deal of information about the family plantations, letters from the son at school (Harvard, William & Mary, University of Virginia, & Princeton). The material also sheds some light on Norfolk history, and it has important papers reflecting national history in the 1820's and 1830's. The material from the 1860's deals chiefly with the career of Edmund Bradford, husband of Anne Elizabeth Tazewell, an officer in the Confederate Army. There are a few letters from Mrs. Bradford at Charlotte Court House, giving her impressions of the last days of the Civil War. Dated materials are arranged chronologically in boxes 1-19: box 1, 1650-1799; box 2, 1780-1788; box 3, 1789-1795; box 4, 1796-1801; box 5, 1802-1804; box 6, 1805-1811; box 7, 1812-1818; box 8, 1819-1821; box 9, 1822-1824; box 10, 1825; box 11, 1826; box 12, 1827-1829; box 13, 1830-1831; box 14, 1832-1834; box 15, 1835-1839; box 16, 1840-1843; box 17, 1844-1847; box 18, 1848-1863; box 19, 1864-1899. Undated materials (boxes 20-21) contains papers of Henry Tazewell related to his law practice and his senatorial career; there are a few papers which discuss the impeachment of William Blount. There are also legal and political papers of Littleton Tazewell, bills and receipts, undated maps of Virginia and South Carolina, clippings and printed materials. The volumes (boxes 20-21) contains 132 letters from Littleton Tazewell to his son, John Nivison, written 1821-1853; "Sketches of His Own Family," by Littleton; an index of letters received by family members and a letterbook, by John N. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Series IV consists of correspondence between Vaughan and the DuPont Co. for which he served as agent (B V462.4; photocopies of 73 letters).

Biddle-Rush family. Papers, 1776-1876.
Title:
Papers, 1776-1876.
This miscellaneous group of letters is written mainly by members of the Biddle and Rush families. The largest group of letters in this section are those of Richard Rush, 1812-1857, covering his career as Comptroller of the Treasury, acting Secretary of State, Minister to Great Britain, Secretary of the Treasury, Minister to France, and private citizen. Some of the Rush letters deal with domestic politics and foreign policy, but the greater part is either routine official business or personal in nature. Clement Biddle's letters, 1781-1813, relate mostly to business affairs. Present, too, are two smaller groups: Nicholas Biddle's papers, 1824-1842 concern banking and the Second Bank of the United States; and Episcopal Bishop of Alabama, Richard H. Wilmer's letters, 1812-1857, discuss church matters.
