Papers of Edgar Allan Poe, 1836-1955.

The collection includes one manuscript by Poe, a fragment of "The Rational of Verse." The collection contains 20 letters, 8 of which are by Poe and 4 by his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm. They discuss Poe's literary background and his writings, especially "The Literati of New York City ..." and "Eureka," their publication and copyright ownership; Maria Clemm's health, loss of loved ones and financial problems; the estate of William Clemm, Jr.; William James Hubard; and periodical literature. Also George R. Graham; "Penn Magazine" (later "Stylus"); Caddie [Richmond?]'s dancing; "Annie" [Nancy Locke Heywood Richmond]; Poe publisher Justus Starr Redfield; a biographical sketch of F.W. Thomas; the writing of Thomas Holley Chivers; the "Southern Literary Messenger"; "Memoir of an Author" by Rufus W. Griswold; the authenticity of a Vernon Fletcher portrait of Poe; and the authorship of "Autobiography of a Monomaniac ..." There are also 4 magazine photographs (2 of John Allan, 2 of the "Southern Literary Messenger" building); 2 receipts, one of which is signed by Poe; 4 miscellaneous photocopies (2 from Harper and Brothers "A Catalogue of Valuable Standard Works" containing a description of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" by Poe, page one of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and a page of a manuscript of "Marginalia" by Poe); and a stanza of "Isabella" by Sara Anna Lewis copied in Poe's hand.
