The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
