Papers of the Lewis, Anderson and Marks families, 1771-1908.

Papers of the related families include correspondence, legal and financial papers. Much of it pertains to land and slave holdings of the families in Virginia and the Arkansas territory. Meriwether Lewis items include power of attorney from Lucy Marks, 1792 June 20; a land indenture 1797 July 13; receipts, 1797, 1798, 1806-1816; draft of a letter, 1809 July 8 concerning financial matters and the trial of a felon; a list of articles contained in two trunks belonging to him, 1809; a document pertaining to a debt owed by Lewis, 1810; a document pertaining to his estate, 1810-1811; John Hastings Marks to Reuben Lewis on a partially successful journey to Chickasaw lands to recover his property [horse, rifle, dirk, pistols] in an1812 letter which also mentions the death of a friend in the Richmond theater fire of 1811; and a letter regarding a land warrant belonging to him, 1819. Wiliam Clark items include letters to John H. Marks, 1810 Mar 29, 1811 Aug. 30; and a memo of a contract concerning the printing of a book on the journey of Lewis and Clark, 1813. Other items of interest include a letter from a slave "Uncle Paul", 1778; copies of the 1791 will of John Marks; letters to Lucy Marks; indenture for sale of slaves by Lucy Marks, 1803; miscellaneous accounts from Louisiana; ;receipts for slave sales, 1815, 1816; letters pertaining to the Bureau of Indian Afairs, and the Cherokee and Osage Indians, 1820; account of Reuben Lewis's travels down the Mississippi, 1821; correspondence regarding land warrents for William Lewis's service in the Revolution; letters from freedman Overton Hollinsworth to his former master, 1889; report cards from Bloomfield Academy; and T.J. Scott Civil War parole paper, 1865, and orders, 1862-1864. Other correspondents include Nicholas Biddle, Anna Seeley, Tuttle, and V.W. Southall.
