Robert Livingston (1654-1728), was an influential businessman and politician in colonial Albany, N.Y. Also known as Robert Livingston the Elder, he was of the first generation of the prominent Livingston family of New York State. Born in Scotland, Livingston spent many years in Holland, where he acquired the Dutch language and customs. He moved to Albany in 1673, and was shortly appointed town clerk and secretary of the board of commissioners for Indian Affairs. In 1686, he received a patent for land comprising the present-day New York counties of Columbia and Dutchess, on which he built his family home, Livingston Manor. In 1709 he represented the district of Albany in the Assembly and in 1718 was elected speaker. He functioned as secretary of Indian Affairs from the 1670s on, officially from 1696 to 1710, at which time he relinquished this post to his nephew, Robert Livingston, Jr. (1663-1725). Robert Livingston the Elder retired in 1725. Certain of his descendents played instrumental roles in the political life of colonial New York City and the founding of the United States. His grandson, Philip Livingston (1716-1778), for whom Brooklyn's Livingston Street is named, was a New York delegate to the Continental Congress and the only Brooklyn resident to sign the Declaration of Independence. His great-grandson, Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), served as Recorder of New York City and was the first Chancellor of New York, as well as the first U.S. Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

Franklin-Bache Papers, 1707-1799
Title:
Franklin-Bache Papers 1707-1799
Containing over 4 linear feet of letters and documents, the Franklin-Bache Papers comprises the second largest collection of letters and documents relating to Benjamin Franklin in the APS Library. Although the scope of the collection is broad, including materials from the time of Franklin's arrival in Philadelphia to his death, the heart of the collection documents the period of Franklin's ministry in France (1776-1785) and his diplomatic efforts to win financial and military support for the revolutionary cause, as well as less intensive coverage of his ministry in England before the Revolution. Franklin's correspondence with American and French officials, financiers (personal and otherwise), and savants provides tantalizing details on the social context of Franklin's ministry in France, his intellectual life, and his growing celebrity. Much of the correspondence documents the efforts to convince French officials early in the war to support the American cause, but there is valuable material relating to the peace negotiations as well. The collection is equally rich in personal correspondence, including a rich set of letters from Mary Stevenson Hewson, Georgiana Shipley, Catherine Ray Greene, Jane Mecom, Deborah Franklin, and a number of Franklin's other relatives. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Title:
Peter Stephen Du Ponceau papers 1663-1844
A group of incoming letters relate to law, linguistics, and, less importantly, history, 1781-1827. Among the correspondents are James Fenimore Cooper and John Sergeant on law, George W. Featherstonhaugh, Albert Gallatin, and John Pickering on linguistics, and Jared Sparks on history. The second group consists of Du Ponceau's correspondence and notes, including notes on silk culture, 1820s, copies of the legal opinions of Bushrod Washington, and papers dealing with constitutional questions in Alabama, 1831-1833. Also present in this group are autobiographical letters, 1836-1844, addressed to Robert Walsh and others. The third group contains Du Ponceau's letter books, 1792-1801, 1803-1814, 1820-1842; legal precedents, 1784-1798, 1801-1830; letters, 1818-1843, from John Pickering, the Boston lawyer and judge who shared Du Ponceau's interest in linguistics. Du Ponceau's notes and abstracts concerning the origin of the American Philosophical Society, taken from the minutes of the Junto, the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge, the American Philosophical Society, and from the Jared Sparks edition of the Works of Benjamin Franklin. The transcriptions of letters sent to Du Ponceau, prepared by Job R. Tyson, a Vice-President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, were to be used for a memorial biography of Du Ponceau, prepared after his death in 1844. Tyson's selection reflects a strong bias toward military and political figures including DeWitt Clinton, James Kent, John Marshall, James Madison, and James Monroe.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

There is also a large body of correspondence of his distant cousin, Walter Livingston. Walter Livingston's correspondence contains some letters and accounts related to his activities as Deputy Commissary General during the Revolutionary War, but most of it relates to the settlement of the estate of his father, Robert Livingston, and to his own business activities, including the operation of the iron furnace at Ancram (N.Y.), and investments in land in New York and Vermont. Some of Walter Livingston's investments involved William Duer. There is also a large body of material related to the settlement of Robert R. Livingston's estate, and to the business activities of his son-in-law, Robert L. Livingston. Robert L. Livingston had extensive landholdings, and was involved in the North River Steam Boat Company.

North, William North Duane, and the latter's mother, Mrs. A.D. Duane. The James Duane papers, ca. 1756-1798, comprise letters, deeds and other land papers, a large group of legal papers, miscellaneous certificates, commissions, bills, memoranda, etc., and pertain to such matters as: his practice of law in New York and New Jersey; relations with Great Britain and political affairs in the colonies prior to the Revolution; New York State's controversy with Massachusetts over the New Hampshire grants, and Duane's own holdings in the disputed area; his activities and interests as New York delegate to the Continental Congress, as the first federal judge for the district of New York, as a New York State senator, and as mayor of New York City; the settling of Duanesburgh, Schenectady County, New York; affairs of the Livingston family and of Livingston Manor; the settlement of estates; his property holdings in the Hardenburgh, Schuyler, and Franklin patents, and in New York City, Otsego County, Ulster County, and Socialborough, New Hampshire (now Rutland, Vermont); New York State boundaries; military and political events during the Revolutionary War; Indian affairs during the war; etc. Some of his more frequent correspondents were George Clinton, Robert R. Title:
A journal of a tour in the United States of America; and notes on various information collected during the progress of it in the years 1794 and 1795, ca. 1805.
Journal, written ca. 1805, in 19 v., including one index volume, and a draft, ca. 1795, of his report to the Board of Agriculture in England, which was printed in London in 1801, under the title Observations on the agriculture of the United States of America. The journal, evidently a fair copy written later from notes taken during his trip, describes his voyage from Hull to New York on the Fair American, and continues with his tour south to Richmond, and north to the Hudson Valley, Albany, Ticonderoga, Niagara, Quebec, Vermont, the White Mountains, Portland, Boston, Connecticut, and intermediate points. He writes about people he met, particularly British minister George Hammond, Robert R. Livingston, and Philip Schuyler. He also discusses manufactures, slavery, the price of provisions, sawmills, schools, the waste of timber, taxes, land tenure and rental, wages, the wheat trade at Albany, wool, sheep, use of oxen, trees, plants, wildlife, treatment received at inns, the use of gypsum or plaster, complaints about the conduct of British officers and cruisers, crops, the curing of beef, etc. The report to the Board of Agriculture discusses such issues as the price of labor, irrigation, profitability of wheat crops, Buffalo clover, cost of land, clover seed as an export for refertilizing English soil, and American husbandry in general. The material is accompanied by a photocopy of Strickland's notes during his journey, kept in a printed format entitled Naturalist's Journal, and photographs of Boynton Hall, Strickland's home in Yorkshire.

The collection consists of more than 1,100 letters, clippings, reprints, and other documents amassed by John Sanford Barnes and others to, from, and about notable persons including many with named series in the Naval History Society Collection (e.g., William Bainbridge, John Barry , French E. Chadwick, Gustavus Conyngham, Gustavus Vasa Fox, Caspar F. Goodrich, Isaac Hull, John Paul Jones, Richard Worsam Meade 3rd, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Henry A. Wise). Highlights of the series include documents signed by Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison; others signed by John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, Richard Henry Dana, David Farragut, Robert Fulton, John Hancock, Rufus King, Seth Low, Robert Morris, and Matthew C. Perry; and a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair removed after his death and sent by Robert Todd Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox at the latter's request. Among David Porter's letters are cartoons and drawings by him, including one of animal-headed naval officers listening to explanations of the value of steam-powered vessels, which complement others in the Naval History Society's Fox collection. The William Smith folder includes a map of an attack on Whampoa, China, in 1870. It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

Title:
Letter [manuscript] : Arlington House, to Robert R. Livingston, 1811 May 12.
Custis discusses mainly agricultural issues, particularly sheep breeding and the price of wool. He also discusses the wine--this "native beverage"--which he has shipped to Livingston. Comparing the wine to "at least the delightful flavor of patriotism," Custis ends on a patriotic note, saying, "The Republic must be great and free, the country of Washington must be immortal."

Alexander, William, 1726-1783. Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
Title:
Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.

Correspondence : with son-in-law, Samuel Lawrence Gouverneur, 1817-1828.
Monroe sends a letter of introduction for Gouverneur and asks the recipient to assist him in his studies; writes to Gouverneur asking him to represent him in Washington concerning his claim before Congress, and informs him about selling the Albemarle County, Va., land. Gouverneur writes to Monroe about Hortensia Hay's illness, problems in Florida, a dispute with Robert R. Livingston, and family news and health. He expresses sympathy for Monroe's financial problems, gives advice on settling accounts with the federal government, and hopes for Elizabeth Monroe's recovery. Gouverneur announces the births of a daughter and a son, reports on the health of the president's nephew James Monroe, reports that the session of the New York Assembly was a success but that he will not run for another term and instead considers running for Congress. He comments on the possible sale of Monroe's land in Albemarle County, reports that charges of fraud against himself were dropped, acknowledges receiving Monroe's letter about the death of Joseph Monroe, reports a financial loss in a local business failure, and thanks Monroe for a loan.
