Speeches at a meeting with the sachems of the Six Nations, 1775.

A manuscript copy (and photocopies) of speeches delivered at meetings of the sachems of the Six Nations--the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca Indians--and Indian commissioners Volkert Down, Turbot Francis, and Oliver Wolcott. The meetings, witnessed by Continental Congressmen James Duane, Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Lynch, and Abraham Yates, and supervised by Philip Schuyler, were preliminary steps to win cooperation of the Six Nations in the war against Britain.

Abraham Yates, Jr. (1724-1796) was an American politician and pamphleteer. A radical Whig who was elected to New York provincial congresses and conventions, he was chairman of the convention (1776-1777) which drafted the first state constitution, served as a state senator from 1777 to 1790, and was mayor of Albany from 1790 to 1796.
