The materials in this bound volume were generated due to a manuscript called the "Harris manuscript." The Harris manuscript was written down by the sisters Amelia Harris (1815-1891) and Jane Harris (1823-1897). They compiled a family repertoire of Scottish ballads, mainly passed on orally to the sisters by their mother, Grace Dow Harris (Mrs. David Harris) (b.1782). This manuscript and some correspondence was purchased in 1873 by Professor Francis James Child of Harvard University who was a scholar of ballads, in order to help make these songs known. Other correspondents involved with the Harris manuscript include: William Edmondstoune Aytoune, Norval Clyne, and others.
Child was an American philologist, Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846), and Harvard professor of rhetoric, oratory, and English. George Lyman Kittredge (Harvard A.B. 1882) was Child's protégé and successor at Harvard, and he organized and described this material after Child's death in 1896.
Child, born in Boston, Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard University in 1846. He became the Harvard Boylston professor of rhetoric, oratory, and elocution in 1851 and in 1876 became professor of English. He was known for studying, collecting, and cataloging folk ballads and compiled the authoritative work, The English and Scottish popular ballads.
American author and philologist.
Child graduated from Harvard in 1846 and taught rhetoric and oratory and English at Harvard.
Child graduated from Harvard University in 1846. He was an American philologist and professor of English at Harvard who studied, collected, and cataloged folk ballads.
Epithet: Professor of Rhetoric at Harvard College
Francis James Child (1825-1896) was born in Boston, the third of eight children of Joseph Child and his wife Mary James Child. He was a graduate of Harvard College, A.B. 1846. After graduation he remained at Cambridge as tutor in mathematics (1846-1848) and later in history and political economy (1848-1849). From 1849 to 1851 he studied philosophy, the classics, and Germanic philology at the University of Göttingen. Upon his return to Harvard he became the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory. In 1860, he married Elizabeth Ellery Sedgwick, daughter of Robert Sedgwick of New York, and they had three daughters and one son.
In 1876, Child was made professor of English and devoted himself thereafter to the teaching and study of literature. His chief works were on Spenser and Chaucer, and he is best known for his research into the history of English and Scottish ballads, first publishing English and Scottish Ballads (8 vols., 1857-1858), and later, his edition of 305 distinct English and Scottish ballads and their textual variants, English and Scottish Popular Ballads (5 vols., originally issued in 10 parts, 1882-1898). Ballad texts for this edition were culled from manuscript and printed materials extant at the end of the 19th century. This published text was planned "to include every obtainable version of every extant English or Scottish ballad, with the fullest possible discussion of related songs or stories in the popular literature of all nations." The tenth part was virtually complete, except for a general introduction to the whole work, at the time of Child's death in 1896.
At his death, Child left behind a great wealth of manuscripts, copies, letters, and other material pertaining to his study of ballads. George Lyman Kittredge (Harvard A.B. 1882), who was Child's former student, was Child's successor to the Boylston Professorship, and later was Harvard's first Gurney Professor of English (1917). It was Kittredge who spent hundreds of hours organizing this material which he referred to as the "Child MSS" or "Child Manuscripts." The 33 volumes described in this finding aid are the organized product of Kittredge's work, and reflect the order which he imposed upon it. It was Kittredge, also, who completed the last volume of Child's ballad compendium and saw it through to publication. The English and Scottish Popular Ballads is now said to be the publication that established the groundwork for English-speaking ballad scholarship in the 20th century.

Munch's work there; the Chaucer Society and its publications; folk remedies in Chaucer; Beowulf scholarship and his preference for the work of Moriz Heyne over Benjamin Thorpe; and A.J. Ellis's book "On early English pronunciation." There are also postcards to H.O. Houghton and Company regarding revisions of proof for "English and Scottish popular ballads" and one engraving of Child.

Davidson, Thomas, 1840-1900. Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948 (inclusive), 1857-1902 (bulk).
Title:
Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948 (inclusive), 1857-1902 (bulk).
Correspondence, lectures, articles, printed matter, clippings, and film relating to the career of Davidson who came to the U.S. in 1867 and was associated with the St. Louis and Concord schools of philosophy, the founding of the Fellowship of the New Life, and the establishment of the Breadwinners' College. From 1878 to 1884, he was in Italy studying the writings of Antonio Rosmini-Serbati, about whom he published a study in 1882. The major portion of the papers is made up of correspondence, including letters from Henry Adams, John Dewey, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William James, Henry Cabot Lodge, John Stuart Mill, and Stephen Samuel Wise. Only a few pages of his diary of 1858 survive. Also with the papers is material from Edward Endelman, a student of Davidson's. Of particular interest is Endelman's correspondence about Davidson with William T. Harris, a Hegelian philosopher who had been a close friend of Davidson's. In addition, two reels of microfilm collected by John Roemischer which contain letters and articles by Davidson in other repositories have been added to the papers.

Chappell, W. (William), 1809-1888,. W. (William) Chappell English ballad index collection, 18--.
Title:
W. (William) Chappell English ballad index collection, 18--.
This finding aid brings together a number of manuscript transcripts of English ballad indexes that were "copied under the direction of William Chappell." Some of the volumes include notes in the hand of William Chappell, but the predominant copyist's hands are identified in a letter from Chappell to Child (1875 May 29) as that of Chappell's young daughters. A few volumes are annotated by Harvard ballad scholar Francis James Child. Most of the indexes list ballad text by first line. Collection includes transcripts for ballad indexes to the collections of: Pepys Ballads; Pepys' collection of "Penny merriments"; Ballad collections of Richard Heber, John Bagford, and Anthony à Wood; Ballad collection of Francis Douce; and Ballad collection of Richard Rawlinson. Original collections are at the Bodleian Library (Oxford University) and Magdalene College (University of Cambridge).

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948, 1857-1902
Title:
Thomas Davidson papers 1857-1948 1857-1902
