James Hammond Trumbull was a philologist, historian, bibliographer, and first librarian of the Watkinson Library, Hartford, Conn.

James Hammond Trumbull (1821-1897) of Hartford, Ct., was an historian, philologist, and bibliographer. In Connecticut, he served as state librarian, registrar, secretary of state, and trustee and librarian of the Watkinson Library of Reference in Hartford. He transcribed, edited, and published numerous historical records and other colonial writings in addition to considerable contributions as an historian and language scholar of the Indians. He was elected to membership of the American Antiquarian Society in 1855.
