Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Virginia from 1835-1853. In the years following his departure, he founded and was president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Boston.
Shields was a student from Cumberland County, Va.; afterwards a captain and surgeon, C.S.A., then physician and farmer in Union County, Ohio.
William Barton Rogers was one of four sons of Patrick Kerr Rogers and Hannah Blythe Rogers. The eldest of his brothers, James Blythe Rogers, was trained as a physician, but spent most of his life as a professor of chemistry. Henry Darwin Rogers made his primary scientific contributions in the field of geology, and the youngest brother, Robert Empie Rogers, was a professor of chemistry and physician. Throughout their lives, the four brothers worked in close conjunction in their scientific endeavors, with the result that a description of one brother’s achievements is incomplete without some account of the others’ activities.
Best known as founder and first president of MIT, William Barton Rogers began his career as professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the College of William and Mary and later taught natural philosophy at the University of Virginia. He also served as state geologist of Virginia and led the first Geological Survey of the state. At about the same time, Henry Darwin Rogers was state geologist of New Jersey and state geologist of Pennsylvania. Although Willam Rogers taught many facets of natural philosophy and chemistry, he made significant contributions in geology, and his articles were often co-authored by his brother Henry. In 1849, William Rogers married Emma Savage of Boston, and in 1853 the couple moved to Boston. Supported by the scientific community of Boston, Rogers brought to life his conception of a dual theoretical and technical scientific education, and largely through his efforts, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was incorporated in 1861. William Barton Rogers served as President of MIT from the first meeting of the incorporators in 1862 until 1870, then served a second term as president from 1879 until 1881. He died in 1882 and is buried in the James Savage plot in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The youngest of the Rogers family members represented in this collection of papers is William Barton Rogers II, who was a son of James Blythe Rogers and was named in honor of his uncle. William B. Rogers II, was exposed early to the scientific activities of his father and uncles, who encouraged him to seek a career in science. Although he maintained an amateur interest in science, William B. Rogers II, turned to a career in banking and served the Western Savings Fund Society of Philadelphia for thirty years.

Sanborn, F. B. (Franklin Benjamin), 1831-1917. Papers of Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, 1851-1914.
Title:
Papers of Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, 1851-1914.
The collection contains the manuscripts of 61 partial or complete poems, two partial verse plays, a biographical and critical discussion of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a prologue spoken by Edward W. Emerson at the opening of the Concord Theatre in 1857, and a quotation about John Brown. Sanborn's correspondence is chiefly about his writing. Letters to and from the Torch Press of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, concern the "Life of John Brown," "Recollections of 70 years, " and monographs on Bronson Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and discuss illustrations, printing, publication, costs and advertisements. Other topics include friends and fellow writers particularly Bronson Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry D. Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walt Whitman, Franklin Pierce, Ellery Channing and Richard W. Gilder; meetings of the American Social Science Association; his school in Concord, Mass.; lectures in Iowa; and thoughts on the outbreak of the Civil War. A facsimile of a letter from Nathaniel Hawthorne to an unidentified correspondent (mistakenly believed to have been Sanborn) mentions the "Old Manse." There are also three photographs, a newspaper clipping regarding Sanborn's arrest for disturbing the peace, and a typed description of Hawthorne's ideas.

Title:
Madison and Randolph letters [manuscript], 1828 -1831.
Madison writes to Monroe,1828 February 5, concerning the Virginia Convention of 1829 and the role of ex-Presidents in politics. He believes that "the task imposed on us by the Convention is of so delicate a nature that with their foreknowledge of our purpose, it ought to have been forborne. Your idea of alluding to the advantage of having the experienced counsel of ex-Presidents in trying contingencies may be more suited to you than to me, more of life being within your prospect than within mine." John Randolph of Roanoke writes to Washington Irving, 1831 August 22, that he is considering sailing on "The Hannibal" and asks if he needs to make an arrangements with Customs, or if Irving has any "commands for the United States." William Barton Rogers writes to his brother, Henry Barton, 1848 March 29, concerning classes at the University of Virginia and the publication of scientific articles.

The collection contains the political correspondence of Alexander H.H. Stuart, particularly from 1850-1853, when he served in Fillmore's cabinet and from 1857-1861, when he was in the Virginia State Senate. The Whig Party is a major topic. Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Also slavery, abolition, Southern conservative opposition to secession, Virginia elections of 1831, 1851, 1859, 1867, the aftermath of Nat Turner's rebellion, the use of statistics in government, the Confederate Congress, sectional reconciliation after the Civil War, the Readjustor controversy, political patronage, and internal improvements. Also mentioned are Revolutionary War pension claims, migration of free blacks to Liberia, affairs at the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Agency in 1851, California politics and Indians in 1851, the Tehuantepec Isthmus route, Iowa in 1851, San Francisco in 1854, New Orleans in 1861, West Virginia in 1861, the U.S.S. Princeton explosion, Dorothea Dix's efforts to establish hospitals for the mentally ill, building of the U.S. Capitol, the Virginia Central Railroad and the University of Virginia. Many letters convey local news in Staunton and Augusta County, Va., such as the development of Alum Springs, the establishment of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, smallpox cases and land sales and controversies in Virginia and Kentucky. Others refer to legal cases handled by Stuart, including suits involving the Bath Iron Works and Buffalo Forge, and the Wheeling Bridge. Several letters discuss family affairs including plans by a cousin to run a boarding house for young women in Athens, Greece. Only a few letters mention the Civil War and Reconstruction and include references to the military movements of Confederate general Robert S. Garnett. Topics in earlier Stuart and the related Baldwin family papers include ratification of the U.S. constitution, Jeffersonian party politics, political events during the administration of George Washington, Washington Academy, the University of Virginia and its honor system, Washington College, and William Wirt's biography of Patrick Henry. The papers also contain an architectural drawing of an unidentified house, an engraving of Alexander H.H. Stuart, insurance policies, stock certificates, indentures, wills, land plats, and speeches by Alexander H.H. Stuart. Military papers of Captain George M. Cochran, Jr., Quartermaster, 52nd Virginia Infantry, consist chiefly of requisitions and receipts. There are also two printed pamphlets, 1849, in French and German, on the potato blight.
