The letters, written to Fontaine while he was a professor of chemistry and geology at West Virginia University, are chiefly from geologists and concern the study of plant life, minerals, fossils, and the strata of West Virginia and Virginia. The correspondents, several of whom were with the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania and the United States Geological Survey, include Charles A. Ashburner, Persifor Frazer, Jr., William S. Glenn, Hilary Jones, Washington C. Kerr, J. Peter Lesley, Fielding B. Meek, William Barton Rogers, Eugene A. Smith, John J. Stevenson, and Israel C. White.
