Earl Russell Browder (1891-1973) was General Secretary of the Communist party of the United States during the height of its popularity, in the 1930s and 1940s and twice represented the Party as its candidate for President. Earl Browder was born on May 20, 1891, in Wichita, Kansas. He was the son of William Browder and Martha Jane Hankins Browder. His father was a teacher and farmer who was avidly Populist. Earl Browder had little formal education and went to work to help support the family. At the age of 15 Browder joined the Socialist party, but within a few years he moved on to the newly formed Syndicalist League of North America, led by William Z. Foster. He took courses in law and business and became manager of a cooperative store in Olathe, Kansas where he authored a manual on the principles of accounting for cooperatives. In 1917, Browder was convicted of espionage for speaking out against potential US involvement in World War I and following his release from prison continued to oppose the war and was again convicted and served a second sentence. Soon after he left prison in 1919, he joined the newly organized Communist party. He also went to work for Foster's Trade Union Educational League (TUEL) in New York City. In 1921 Browder and Foster represented the TUEL at the Red International of Labor Unions (RILU) in Moscow. Browder became a top aide to Foster. In 1926 Browder travelled to Moscow and then China as part of an international Communist labor delegation. Returning to the United States in 1929, Browder helped Foster become General Secretary of the party. When poor health forced Foster into semi-retirement in 1932, Browder succeeded to the party leadership. During the 15 years of his leadership, the Communist party grew from a membership of a few thousand to over 100,000 and gained both visibility and considerable respectability with Browder as its "face" and "voice". Browder was the Party’s candidate for President in 1936 and 1940, both times with James W. Ford as his running mate. In 1940, Browder was convicted of passport fraud and sentenced to four years in federal prison in Atlanta but his sentence was commuted by President Roosevelt after 14 months. In the election of 1944, Browder supported Roosevelt’s reelection and presided over the dissolution of the United States Communist Party and the formation of the Communist Political Association. In 1946, Browder and his brother William were both expelled from the international Communist Party. Following his expulsion, Earl Browder wrote and lectured and worked with Soviet publishers and authors to get their books published in the United States. Browder died in Princeton, NJ on June 27, 1973.
Communist leader.

Title:
Fifteenth International Brigade Photographic Unit photographs [graphic]. 1937-1938.
The collection consists of 1,832 images taken by the Unit from August 1937 to September 1938 and captures the activities of the battalions that made up the 15th International Brigade including the American Lincoln and Washington Battalions (commonly known as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade); the British Battalion; the Canadian MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion; the Dimitrov Battalion (volunteers from Yugoslavia); and the 24th Spanish Battalion (volunteers from Cuba). The images capture the daily life of the volunteers in combat, in the camps, and in the towns, villages, and across the rugged terrain where the Brigade trained and participated in the fighting. In addition, the collection documents ambulances and medical treatment, political assemblies, congresses, celebrations, the everyday activities of the Spanish people and the destruction caused by the fascist aerial bombardment. Among the many volunteers pictured are Alvah Bessie, Archie Brown, Joe Dallet, Robert Merriman, Edwin Rolfe, Saul Wellman, Milt Wolff, John Tisa, and George Watt. Also included are images of visiting dignitaries, journalists and observers including Earl Browder, American military attache Stephen Fuqua, Robert Minor, Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Meyer Levin and Joseph North. There is also an image of presentation of a flag by Juventud Socialista Unificada (Unified Socialist Youth of the Spanish Communist Party).

International Brigades. International Brigades Archive, Moscow [graphic] : selected images, 1937-1938.
Title:
International Brigades Archive, Moscow [graphic] : selected images, 1937-1938.
Among the subjects represented are group photographs and portraits of members of the International Brigades (including British, Dimitrov, Dombrowski, Lincoln-Washington and MacKenzie Papineau Battalions), International Brigades training, life in camp, leisure activities, International Brigades Band, Spanish Republican military leaders, Communist Party leaders (including Earl Browder), distinguished visitors such as Langston Hughes and George Orwell (Eric Blair), and a photo album compiled by Major Stefanovich prior to the Brunete offensive. Although these photographs were not the work on the unit specifically designated to record activity of the English-speaking units, there are a substantial number of images of U.S. and Canadian volunteers included. Each file folder has a descriptive title provided by the International Brigades Archive. Caption information comes from an English translation of the Guide to the International Brigade Archives (Moscow) commissioned by ALBA for their own use. Some proper names have been corrected or expanded, and some abbreviations have been expanded. The Moscow guide provided descriptive captions for some images, but many are without caption information. Entries in the box and folder list begin with a file number and title (bold type), followed by a complete listing of image numbers in that file. Individual captions for those images that have caption information follow. Four-hundred-and-twenty-five (425) photographs are attributed to Yugoslavian volunteer, Major Vladimir Stefanovich. Folder 5 (5/179) contains 195 of his photographs and folder 22 (5/196) contains 230 of his photographs. The remaining 623 images are not credited to a photographer. The negatives have been printed on 5 x 7 inch sheets with 3 or 4 images per sheet.

Guide to the Grace and Max Granich Papers and Photographs, 1920s-1998
Title:
Guide to the Grace and Max Granich Papers and Photographs, 1920s-1998
Grace Granich was the secretary for Earl Browder, the head of the Communist Party, USA. In the 1930s, she traveled to the Soviet Union and to Shanghai, China, where she served as a liaison to Chinese radicals, notably Agnes Smedley. She also edited The Voice of China (her husband Max Granich was its publisher), the organ of the League for National Salvation, headed by Mme. Sun Yat Sen. During World War II she headed Intercontinent News, a Communist Party news agency. Max (Manny) Granich was the younger brother of writer Michael Gold and served as chauffeur to Earl Browder. Following World War II, the Graniches distanced themselves from the CPUSA and in 1946 founded Higley Hill Camp (Wilmington, Vermont), a left-wing summer camp for children, which they ran until 1964. The collection contains typescripts, oral history transcripts, correspondence, clippings, government reports, photographs, and some ephemera and research notes and materials that document Grace and Max Granich's involvement with the Communist Party and Higley Hill Camp.

Darcy, Samuel, 1905-. Oral history interviews with Samuel Adams Darcy, 1970 September 18 and 1971 March 23.
Title:
Oral history interviews with Samuel Adams Darcy, 1970 September 18 and 1971 March 23.
Sam Darcy's (originally Samuel Dardeck) parents brought him to this country in 1908 from the Ukraine. The first interview contains vivid accounts of the life of a Russian immigrant family from 1917 through the 1920s. He discusses his view of the roots of American radicalism. Darcy became involved with the Young Workers League in 1920. After attending New York University, he worked as Jay Lovestone's assistant at the Daily Worker newspaper. In 1926 he became National Secretary of the Young Workers' Communist League and in 1927 went to Moscow as the United States representative to the executive committee of the Young Communist International. Following that he was elected to represent the youth movement on the presidium of the convention in Moscow and was present to hear Trotsky's defense before the presidium. Upon his return to this country, he was, for a brief period, editor of the Daily Worker. In the second interview, Darcy discusses briefly his role as director of the Workers School in New York in 1929, a position he held concurrently with the editorship of the Daily Worker. He discusses some of the activities of the Communist Party in New York in the 1930s. In 1930, Darcy was sent to California as state secretary of the Communist Party, but returned regularly to New York City. He spent from 1935 to 1937 in Moscow and describes in great detail his experiences during that period. The interview gives a description of his relationships with such people as Earl Browder, Jay Lovestone, and William Foster. Also, includes sixteen pages of Darcy's notes clarifying his remarks in the interviews.

Harry Weinberger papers, 1915-1944
Title:
Harry Weinberger papers
The papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, notes, and other materials documenting Weinberger's career as a lawyer who specialized in civil liberties cases and, later in his career, copyright law. The one hundred and sixteen (116) case files include legal briefs, writs, and memoranda prepared by Weinberger and his staff, and similar material prepared by opposing attorneys. Correspondence files include letters with clients and individuals interested in a specific case. Weinberger's clients included: Alexander Berkman, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, Emma Goldman, and Eugene O'Neill. The papers also include a small number of Weinberg's short stories and plays and correspondence with his nephew, Warren Weinberger. The Harry Weinberger Papers cover Weinberger's professional career from around 1915 until the early 1940s. In that time, Weinberger handled many types of cases, but he took a special interest in people whom he believed had been deprived of their civil liberties. As a result, Weinberger defended many aliens, immigrants, anarchists, and radicals. Two of Weinberger's most celebrated clients were the anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Another client of Weinberger was the wealthy draft dodger, Grover Cleveland Bergdoll. Most of Weinberger's clients were, however, neither famous nor wealthy. Many were referred to Weinberger by service agencies like the American Civil Liberties Union, the League for Amnesty of Political Prisoners, and the Worker's Defense Fund. In the later part of his career, Weinberger became an expert in copyright law, representing many writers, including Eugene O'Neill, in copyright and plagiarism suits. Weinberger corresponded with many prominent figures in connection with his legal work. His correspondents include Roger N. Baldwin, William A. Black, Alice Stone Blackwell, Harry M. Daugherty, Albert DeSilver, Elizabeth G. Flynn, Agnes Inglis, Daniel Kiefer, Robert M. LaFollette, Alvaro Obregon, Elmer Rice, Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffans, Norman Thomas, Frank P. Walsh, Thomas E. Watson and Stephen S. Wise. The papers provide information on United States policies toward aliens, anarchists, and radicals in America during and after the first World War. The papers also contain material on United States immigration and deportation policies and important materials on Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Ricardo Flores Magon, and Tom Mooney. There is, however, very little personal material on Weinberger in the papers. Biographical information can be found in Weinberger's "A Rebel's Interrupted Autobiography" published in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology in 1 October 1942

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection, 1930-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection, 1930-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the <i>People's World</i>. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the <i>Daily Worker</i> and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, including many local and national labor unions, particularly those affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).

Guide to the Communist Party of the United States of America Records, 1892-2009
Title:
Guide to the Communist Party of the United States of America Records, 1892-2009
The Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) is a Marxist-Leninist political organization that was founded in Chicago in 1919. The CPUSA played a pivotal role in many significant political and social movements of the 20th century. Its Party platform focused largely on working class issues such as fair wages and unemployment, civil rights for racial and ethnic minorities, civil liberties for politically persecuted communities, economic justice for the poor, the unemployed and for immigrants, and international peace efforts. The Party's work left an indelible mark in the arena of progressive politics and made it an influential force in the labor movement, particularly from the 1920s to the 1940s. Its varied political, social, and cultural initiatives attracted the support of a number of prominent artists, intellectuals, and activists, including Woody Guthrie, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Angela Davis. Though the CPUSA's strength and size declined sharply following World War II and the advent of the Cold War and McCarthyism, it remains committed to socialism, peace, economic and social justice, and civil rights and liberties. The records of the Communist Party, USA provide vivid documentation of the organization's trajectory from its birth in 1919 to the early 2000s. The collection includes a diverse mix of correspondence, convention and conference materials, essays and manuscripts, internal discussion documents, reports, speech transcripts, research files, printed ephemera, clippings, legal documents, photographs, posters, audio tapes, films, videos, and a wealth of personal papers. Though materials from as early as 1892 can be found in the collection, the bulk of the records were created between 1950 and 1990. A more comprehensive record of the CPUSA's early 20th century activity can be found in the Files of the Communist Party of the USA in the Comintern Archives, 1919-1943 (Microfilm R-7548).

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Norman Thomas papers 1904-1967 1933-1967
Norman Matoon Thomas (1884-1968), the American Socialist leader, started his career as a Presbyterian minister in New York City. He became active in the peace movement during World War I and founded the National Civil Liberties Bureau (renamed American Civil Liberties Union in 1920) with Roger Baldwin. Thomas became an active member of the Socialist Party of America, was co-director of the League for Industrial Democracy, and edited the socialist magazine, The World Tomorrow. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the U.S. six times on the Socialist ticket and was active in the civil rights, universal disarmament and anti-war movements throughout his life. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, speeches, writings, newspaper columns, press releases, and other papers relating to Thomas' career in national politics, his leadership of the Socialist Party and of the labor movement, and his association with various organizations. General correspondence, 1905-1967, accounts for the bulk of the collection and provides, particularly after 1932, an almost daily record of his activities and concerns. These papers document his relationship with leading politicians, government officials, trade union leaders, and major intellectual and political figures of his time. Organizational files, 1904-1967, consist of documents relating to the numerous organizations with which Thomas was involved. Speeches, 1911-1967, include drafts and final copies of his speeches, statements, interviews, publicity materials and many of his speaking schedules. Writings, 1917-1967, contain published and unpublished essays, books, newspaper columns, journals, diaries and unpublished autobiography. Subject files, 1905-1967, consist of reports, essays, clippings, and other printed matter concerning foreign and domestic affairs, civil liberties and discrimination, and war and peace. Also includes records and memorabilia, 1936-1964, from testimonial celebrations held in his honor; financial papers, 1933-1967, family papers, 1915-1969; biographical and publicity materials, 1903-1964; and photographs, ca. 1900-1966.
