Reel 1: Contains approximately five thousand index cards on individual party members. Information typically includes name (and sometimes, a pseudonym), date of joining, geographic location and/or branch name, posts held, disciplinary action taken, and a brief case narrative. Coverage is for the years ca. 1929 - ca. 1939. Also, at the end of the reel, is a list of the names of some 200 people expelled from 1950-1953.Reel 2: Individual case files, including Earl Browder, Phil Frankfeld, and John Lautner. Also includes various published and unpublished CPUSA documents, including a 1950 Central Review Commission report on the California party organization. Coverage is 1940s early 1950s. Reel 3; Individual case files, continued. Also includes a long (41 pp.) typescript by one Jack Smith (pseudonym?) critiquing the work of the Communist Party in the maritime industry and on the waterfront.

Earl Russell Browder (1891-1973) was General Secretary of the Communist party of the United States during the height of its popularity, in the 1930s and 1940s and twice represented the Party as its candidate for President. Earl Browder was born on May 20, 1891, in Wichita, Kansas. He was the son of William Browder and Martha Jane Hankins Browder. His father was a teacher and farmer who was avidly Populist.
