Title:
ALS, 1861 Oct. 19, New York, N.Y., to an unknown correspondent.
Gives an account of a conversation with army quartermaster general Montgomery C. Meigs about concern in Massachusetts over the government's buying supplies for uniforms from abroad. Meigs said that while he believed in supporting home industry, the foreign purchases were necessary to keep sufficient stock on hand. Andrew says that all the output of New England mills will be wanted as well. He asks that an account of the conversation be sent to the Boston newspapers, which have exaggerated the situation.

Title:
Papers, 1860-1861.
Copy of a typescript diary kept in Mass. and Conn. by physician and naturalist Charles F. Winslow from 8 Aug. 1860 - 14 Aug. 1861 noting Winslow's commentary on the 1860 Mass. gubernatorial election, in particular his support for his friend, John A. Andrew, the Republican winner of the election; and encounters between Gov. Andrew and abolitionist Wendell Phillips regarding the appropriateness of speeches advocating civil war in early 1861. Entries also document Winslow's scientific interests, including observations of meteor showers and a comet, and the outfitting of an explorer for an arctic expedition. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence (1860-61) with Winslow, including a letter from Andrew, regarding the gubernatorial campaign.

Benjamin Butler's difficult passage through Maryland in April, 1861; naval operations near Hilton Head Island, S.C. in 1861-62; and the administration of medicine in the military. Other correspondents include Col. (later Gen.) George Leonard Andrews and Gen. Francis Channing Barlow.

Wetherell, John Walcott, 1820-1897. Papers, 1848-1895.
Title:
Papers, 1848-1895.
The collection contains correspondence and documents, for the period 1848 to 1895, especially letters seeking patronage from Wetherell's position as aide-de-camp during the Civil War. These include notes from friends desiring an army commission for themselves, their sons, and other relatives; those seeking discharges for someone who was ill or needed at home; and requests for Wetherell's aid in advancing specific soldiers through the ranks. The correspondents include William Sever Lincoln (1811-1889) and Peter Child Bacon (1804-1886), of Worcester, Mass. There are also business letters from colleagues on Gov. Andrew's staff during the hectic period of army recruitment in 1861. Many letters reflect the confusion on points of organization, military code, and the new governor's wishes. Those who wrote to Col. Wetherell sought clarification on matters of recruitment, desertion, and furloughs. There are several letters from Col. Charles Devens (1820-1891) concerning his assessment of the state's recruitment plans as well as his own regiment's needs; and letters from Gov. Andrew concerning his search for a "paymaster of the state bounties to recruits," and the selection of a trustee to the Worcester State Hospital. The collection contains several documents, such as Wetherell's appointments as justice of the peace and aide-de-camp, and a Worcester bank book of his ward, Charles B. Smead. ( - ).

John A. Andrew papers, 1772-1895.
Papers of John A. Andrew (1818-1867), prominent anti-slavery lawyer and Civil War governor of Massachusetts, including correspondence, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous records. Also included are small amounts of papers of Andrew's wife, Eliza Jones Hersey Andrew, and of his son, John Forrester Andrew. Among the areas well covered in the papers are: fugitive slave litigation including the Anthony Burns case; operations of the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which sponsored anti-slavery settlements in Kansas; Republican Party affairs in Massachusetts and the nation; Governor Andrew's leadership among northern state chief executives in raising funds and gathering troops for the Union cause; and his successful fight for the establishment of an all-black regiment. Among the important correspondents are: Charles Francis Adams, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., Edward Everett, William Lloyd Garrison, Abraham Lincoln, George Gordon Meade, William H. Seward, Edwin M. Stanton, Charles Sumner and Henry Wilson.

Bradbury, A. R. (Ammi Ruhamah), 1810-1899. Diary, 1872-1874.
Title:
Diary, 1872-1874.
Bradbury lost his oldest son William on 13 January 1874, a few weeks before he started the journal, and his grief is evident throughout the two year period. He mourns the loss of "Willie" every year on the anniversary of his death, and mentions it at other times as well, at one point writing ten pages of verse about him. "Willie" was on track to become a Baptist minister like his father, he died before finishing school at Newton Theological Institute, and his father fondly notes his popularity, saying that all of "Willie's" classmates came to the funeral. Bradbury had a large family of six brothers and sisters, many of whom remained in Auburn, Me., and had children. Samuel Gurney Bradbury (1804-1868) was the oldest. Olive Hersey Bradbury Blaisdell (1806-1870) was a fellow Baptist and Bradbury's favorite sister, he notes that he lived with her and her family briefly after his parents died. Benjamin Thomas Bradbury (1808- ), and Joseph Fellows Bradbury (1814-1889) were his only two living siblings as he wrote his journal in the 1870s, and Bradbury writes of his prayers that Benjamin will "convert" to the Baptist faith. Jennie Derby Bradbury (1818-1831) was called Jane, and died at age thirteen. His youngest brother Levi Loring Bradbury (1822-1860) also attended Bowdoin, then moved to Mississippi to practice law, eventually settling in Texas where he married, had four children, and worked as a lawyer. In December 1873 Bradbury sprained his ankle in the street in Providence and remained at home due to this injury until March 1874. His entries often start "still a prisoner to the house," and he spent much of his time reading published sermons in English and Greek, memorizing parts of the Bible, and writing in his journal. His entries are full of reflections on his childhood, happy life, and the loss of many close family members, and include poetry about his parents, siblings, his wife, to whom he dedicated more than forty verses, and his deceased son William, as well as some religious themed poetry, and one about the pain in his ankle. He concludes his journal soon after his recovery, noting that it is shorter than his other journals due to his injury. This collection contains one bound journal in which Ammi Ruhamah Bradbury made weekly, and sometimes daily, entries about the speakers he heard each weekend at church and daily prayer meetings, and the speeches he himself gave. The journal spans the period from March 1872-April 1874. Bradbury was pastor of the Park Avenue Baptist Church in Providence. His journal shows that he made frequent trips to nearby towns in Rhode Island and Massachusetts to preach at various churches or listen to others preach. In milder weather he frequently mentions going to the park and holding services in the late morning or afternoon outdoors on a platform. He notes the crowd he draws, frequently starting out with a handful of people and ending up with a hundred or more. A devout Baptist, Bradbury enjoyed preaching, listening to others preach, attending daily prayer meetings at Brown University, and attending Baptist revivals or "three days meetings." He was a member of at least four Temperance organizations, and there are several entries about his battle to get support for local legislation banning the sale of liquor. Bradbury performed a number of weddings each year in the spring and summer months, and he enters remarks on each couple in his journal, commenting once on the age differences between couples, and how marriage should not be about "worldly advantage." Soon after, he expresses a wish to perform more weddings for generous fees, as "pin money is very useful." Bradbury notes his "conversion" to Baptism came in 1835 when he was a freshman at Bowdoin, and credits this to Dr. Thomas C. Upham (1799-1872), Bowdoin's professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy. Upham was his mentor and set him on his course to become a minister, and Bradbury sadly remarks on Upham's death in April 1872. He also briefly mentions his roommate at Bowdoin was John Albion Andrew (1818-1867), who would become the Governor of Massachusetts (1861-1866) during the Civil War. On 4 July 1873, Bradbury notes that it was the quietest Fourth he remembers in Providence. He relates that the mayor threatened to fine anyone who bought or sold firecrackers, and forbade people from firing any small arms or pistols in celebration of the holiday.

Greene, William Batchelder, 1819-1878. Letter : Fort Albany, Virginia, to Lt. Col. C. McKeever, Arlington, Virginia, 1862 Sept. 21.
Title:
Letter : Fort Albany, Virginia, to Lt. Col. C. McKeever, Arlington, Virginia, 1862 Sept. 21.
Writing to an assistant adjutant general with the Army of the Potomac, Greene tenders the resignation of his commission as colonel of the 14th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment. He describes at length the reasons, having to do with the case of Major Andrew Washburn, dismissed from the regiment and tried for embezzlement. Greene, who believes Washburn to be innocent, claims that he was being persecuted by the Republican Party of Massachusetts, particularly by General Wadsworth and Governor Andrew, who sent lawyer Stephen H. Phillips to Washington for the purpose of setting his officers against him. He recounts his responsibilities as officer in charge of the forts defending the capitol, requests that his discharge be an honorable one, and asks that his request go through the hands of either General McClellan or General Banks. The letter is apparently in the hand of an aide, and signed by Greene.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Frost Family Papers, 1710-1923
Title:
Frost Family Papers 1710-1923
The papers contain correspondence, account books, and other material documenting the personal lives and professional careers of members of the Frost family. Correspondence of William Frost details his political activity in the Maine Territory, Jeffersonian politics in Massachusetts, and the Embargo Act. Material relating to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's Civil War duties is scarce. His years as Bowdoin College president and his role in the election riot of 1880 are documented more fully. Other material details Chamberlain's business interests.

Hallowell, Norwood Penrose, 1839-1914. Papers, 1764-1914.
Title:
Papers, 1764-1914.
Clippings and correspondence related primarily to Hallowell's career as an army officer and as lieutenant-colonel of the 55th Mass. Regiment, the second Black regiment in the state, during the Civil War. Hallowell was first enlisted as a member of the 20th Mass. regiment and was later involved, along with his brothers Edward N. and Richard P. Hallowell, in the recruitment of Black soldiers for the 54th and 55th Mass. regiments. The Hallowells were active in the anti-slavery movement and in their attempts to get equal pay for Black soldiers and other equal treatment for Blacks. The papers, primarily in scrapbooks, also contain Hallowell's essays as a student at Harvard College (Class of 1861), papers related to his lifelong affiliation and loyalty to the college, and items concerning his career as a businessman in Boston. (Cont.) Correspondents include Richard P. Hallowell, Edward N. Hallowell, John A. Andrew, Morris L. Hallowell, Theodore Roosevelt, George F. Hoar, William H. Taft, and Henry Cabot Lodge.
