Letter : Fort Albany, Virginia, to Lt. Col. C. McKeever, Arlington, Virginia, 1862 Sept. 21.

Writing to an assistant adjutant general with the Army of the Potomac, Greene tenders the resignation of his commission as colonel of the 14th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment. He describes at length the reasons, having to do with the case of Major Andrew Washburn, dismissed from the regiment and tried for embezzlement. Greene, who believes Washburn to be innocent, claims that he was being persecuted by the Republican Party of Massachusetts, particularly by General Wadsworth and Governor Andrew, who sent lawyer Stephen H. Phillips to Washington for the purpose of setting his officers against him. He recounts his responsibilities as officer in charge of the forts defending the capitol, requests that his discharge be an honorable one, and asks that his request go through the hands of either General McClellan or General Banks. The letter is apparently in the hand of an aide, and signed by Greene.
