The Florida State College for Women (FSCW) Artist Series began in 1923. Dean Ella Opperman was the first person in charge of organizing the series. The series was intended to bring renowned artists to FSCW. After FSCW became Florida State University (FSU), the FSU School of Music managed the series. However, in 1974 the FSU Artist Series Committee assumed control. Because of financial difficulties in the early 1990s, the Artist Series was briefly discontinued. The series was then entitled the "Community Concerts in Tallahassee" and included organizations outside the University. By the 1996-1997 season the Community Concerts in Tallahassee name was changed to the Artist Series. Although this new artist series is not a direct organizational descendant of the earlier one it is its spiritual successor.
Florida State University started in 1851 as 2 seminaries and has changed its name at various times to: Seminary West of the Suwannee River, Florida State College, Florida Female College, Florida State College for Women, and in 1947 it became Florida State University and co-educational; by the 1980's FSU was recognized as a major research institute with over 370 buildings on nearly 1200 acres including the main campus of 346 acres in Tallahassee, FL.
The members of the General Faculty include the President, Vice-President, Deans, Professors and other instructional staff, and those members of the Professional Staff to whom the President assigns an academic rank. The General Faculty meets in regular session in the fall of each academic year to receive the annual report of the President, and in special session called by the President either on his or her own initiative or on resolution of the Faculty Senate, or on written request of at least ten percent (prior to 1958 this requirement was fifteen members) of the members of the General Faculty. The functions of the General Faculty are to formulate an opinion upon any subject of interest to the University and make recommendations to the appropriate body or officer for final consideration and to receive reports and announcements from officers of the University and from the Faculty Senate.
Florida State first began playing football at Centennial Field during their inaugural 1947 season. The Doak S. Campbell Stadium opened on October 7, 1950, with a seating capacity of 15,000. In 1954, the stadium grew to a capacity of 19,000. Six thousand more seats were added in 1961. During Bill Peterson's era, it was expanded to 40,500 seats. Between 1978 and 1982 there were three more additions. By 2002, the limit had grown to 82,000 seats.
Several Florida State University campus offices were responsible for the publication and distribution of the FSU Activities Calendars, which document campus student events. During the late 1950s, for example, the calendars were published by the FSU Division of Publications. From the late 1960s through the 1990s, they were published by the Student Union, the Student Activities Office, the Leisure Program Office, and the Office of Public Relations and Special Events. Over the years, the calendar title changed. In the 1950s, it was called "Campus Calendar." From the 1960s until the late 20th Century, it became "Activities Schedule," "Garnet and Gold Guide," and finally "Activities Calendar".
The Faculty Professional Relations and Standards Committee served as a Florida State University faculty committee to address faculty welfare issues.
According to Jim Jones in FSU One Time!, in 1947 Florida State University selected the Seminoles as a nickname for its football and other athletics teams. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, formed in 1957, has since become an integral part of Florida's culture and history. As this collection shows, in the past, the American Indian Movement and several American Indian tribes, such as the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, have protested the practice by many athletic teams of using Native American mascots. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, however, has approved the portrayal of Chief Osceola and Renegade as FSU's official mascot. FSU has always enjoyed a close relationship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, as shown by its respect and admiration for the Seminole people.
The Minutes of the Florida State University Planning Committee document a transition period for Florida State University. On May 15, 1947, the Florida State College for Women became a coeducational institution of university status, the Florida State University. The minutes reflect concerns resulting from this change. The inclusion of men students, growth of the student body, and change in status from a college to a university required appropriate and adequate housing, classroom space, and curricula for the University's current and future needs. The Planning Committee's work addressed these issues, establishing their priorities as the "(1) Needs of the people of the state so far as higher education was concerned; (2) Cooperation with the University of Florida, Regional Education, etc.; (3) Desired functions of the University; and (4) Adequate financing" (Minutes of April 9, 1948).
In 1851 the Florida legislature established two seminaries. In 1857, Seminary West of the Suwannee River began offering post-secondary education to male students. It became coeducational the following year when it merged with Tallahassee Female Academy. In 1901 it became Florida State College, a four year institution.
In 1905 the University of Florida was established as a men's school and the Florida State College became a women's school called the Florida Female College. In 1909 the name was changed to Florida State College for Women. In 1947 it returned to coeducational status and was renamed The Florida State University. Be the 1980's the University was recognized as a major research university with over 370 buildings on nearly 1200 acres, including the main campus of 345 acres in Tallahassee.

Title:
Ruby Diamond collection, 1773-1981.
Correspondence, papers, records, journals, cashbooks, scrapbooks, newspaper articles, passport, currency, manuscripts, books, songs, pictures, stamps, clippings and legal papers. The correspondence, papers, records, bookkeeping journals and cash books of Julius Diamond reflect the economic conditions of the time and are good examples of how merchandising business was conducted. The scrapbook, assembled by John W. Trench, contains manuscripts, Civil War letters and clippings, describing events such as the battles of Gettysburg, Bull Run and Vicksburg. There is an original holograph passport issued by Consul General at Marseilles, France, to a native of Italy, taken during the war. Newspaper clippings discuss the price of gold, burial ceremonies, and the sale of slaves. Also included are recipes, poems, songs and jokes written during and about the Civil War, as well as other historical documents not preserved elsewhere.

George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008, (bulk 1960-2000)
Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Title:
Florida State University Seminole mascot files, 1949-2005 (inclusive) (bulk 1992-1995).
This collection, largely comprised of newspaper clippings and correspondence, documents the controversy from 1991 through 2005 over FSU's use of Native American names and symbols representing Renegade and Chief Osceola, the Seminoles' Native American mascot, and its use in athletic merchandise. There is correspondence between representatives of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Florida Creek Indian Council with FSU reaffirming support for the Seminole name and Marching Chiefs over the use of the Seminole name, war chant, and "tomahawk chop" and letters between university officials about the President Dale Lick's Presidential Study Group on the Use of Seminole Symbolism and Tradition during the early 1990's. In addition, there are prints of early FSU Seminole football players, cheerleaders, and an FSU Homecoming Princess. Frequently cited individuals include James Billie, Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida; Michael Haney, an American Indian activist and elected official of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma; Dale W. Lick, FSU President, and James Anthony Paredes, an FSU faculty member and expert in contemporary North American Indians and applied anthropology. The collection is historically significant to researchers studying the controversial use of Native American mascots on sports teams.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Baldwin, Bertha N. Baldwin letters, 1914-1918.
Title:
Baldwin letters, 1914-1918.
Correspondence. In the account of her "first trip east," she describes travels in battle i n the districts of Chateau Thierry, Rheims, Challon, Ville-en-Tardenois, with vi vid details of blown up roads, detours, bombed cities, and their experiences dur ing the time their hospital and kitchen were housed in an old chateau with walls and roof full of "huge shell holes," their struggle for dryness when it rained, and how they slept with an umbrella and wash basin on their beds. In her letter titled "Salis de Bearn," where she went "on leave" after armistice, she gave minute descriptions of the thermal establishment, "the cure," the good hotel service, her impressions of other guests, the countryside, vineyards, fall colors, sunsets, and views of the Pyrenees from the hotel. She wrote, "This is all I think of for Salis - - now for Armistice Day." Here she told of the tension which existed in Paris for several days during the negotiations pending the signing of the peace treaty, and of the excitement and celebrations in Paris after it was signed. In one of her letters she tells of Christmas in France, which is also in detail, and very typical of the customs in that country. The contents of these letters could be of value to students majoring in Food and Nutrition and those in the School of Nursing.

Title:
Florida State University Libraries accession books, 1909-1969 (inclusive) (bulk 1923-1951).
The handwritten accession books record all commercially-published books, government documents, and journals titles of publications acquired by the FSCW and FSU Library collection from 1909-1951. Each accession book includes the date and number of accession, author, title, place, publisher, date of printing and publication, volume, source (with name of donor or bookseller), and cost. Gaps exist between 1909-1918 and 1918-1923. The two handwritten circulation record books indicate borrowing statistics for faculty and students, by subject area. Each volume covers ten years (1949-1959; 1959-1969). The collection not only documents the growth of the FSU Library's collection; it is also significant to researchers studying the types of materials purchased by a major university library during the first half of the 20th Century.

Florida State College for Women/Florida State University "Odd" team beanies.
These Florida State College for Women "Odd Team" Beanies, one with the name "Karry" stitched on it, and the other unmarked, are significant to researchers studying the early history of inter-collegiate athletics at colleges and universities in the first half of the 20th Century. According to Dr. Jose Blanco, Instructor and Historic Collection Manager in the FSU Department of Textiles and Consumer Sciences, the unmarked Beanie was probably manufactured no earlier than the 1930s, and may also be a reproduction, because it is in such good shape and is not stitched as well as older Beanies made between 1910-1920.
