James Leitch Wright, Jr. was born August 9, 1929, in Ashland, Virginia. He received a B.S. in Engineering from Virginia Military Institute in 1950, and an M.A. and Ph. D. in History from the University of Virginia in 1956 and 1958. Wright served as Associate Professor at the Virginia Military Institute from 1958-1961, Professor at Randolph-Macon College from 1961-1968, and taught history at Florida State University from 1968 until his death on September 28, 1986. He established himself as a major historian of the Southern frontier and of the Indians involvement in it.
