Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, Florida. The institution was chartered in 1851 and has been state-assisted since 1857. It operated under several different names until 1909, when it became Florida State College for Women. In 1947, the name was changed to Florida State University and the institution was made coeducational. It is part of the State University System which is part of the Division of Universities in the Dept. of Education. The university president is appointed by the Board of Regents.

Doak Sheridan Campbell was President of Florida State College for Women and Florida State University from 1941 to 1957. Campbell was born in Tate, Arkansas on November 16, 1888. He received his M.A. in speech and music from Ouachita Baptist College in 1911. In addition, he received a M.A. in 1928 and a Ph.D. in 1930 from George Peabody College for Teachers. Prior to coming to Tallahassee, he held faculty and administrative positions in various schools and colleges in Arkansas. In 1938 he was named Dean of the Graduate School at George Peabody College. In 1941 he succeeded Dr. Edward Conradi as President of the Florida State College for Women. In 1947 Campbell presided over the transition of the women's college into a coeducational university, Florida State University. He retired in 1957 and was appointed President Emeritus until his death in 1973.
