Augustus B. Turnbull III was born in Georgia, 1940. He graduated from the University of Georgia and received his Ph. D. in Government from the University of Virginia. He came to Florida State University in 1971, as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs. He played key roles in the development of FSU's Public Administration Department, the National High Magnetic Laboratory, the FAMU-FSU Engineering School, and the School of Mation Picture, Television, and Recording arts.

In 1991, a week before his death, Turnbull received the Westcott Distinguished Service Medal for outstanding contributions to FSU. He was married to Marjorie Turnbull, State Representative. Turnbull died on November 17, 1991, from lung cancer, at the age of 51.
