English novelist.
Novelist Hugh Walpole was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and educated at Cambridge. After graduation, he supported himself by teaching and began writing novels, gradually building an impressive body of work that earned him significant popularity during his lifetime. A tireless lecturer, he promoted his works with tours and autograph signings that gave him a notable public presence, and contributed to his popularity. A talented writer, his work was marked by traditional themes and values, which some modernist critics found old-fashioned; however, his novels were publicly praised by Henry James, Virginia Woolf, and Joseph Conrad, and were consistently popular. Walpole was an important part of London's literary society between the wars, publishing a novel or collection almost every year.

Autograph letter : Abbotsford [near Melrose], to John Gibson, 1828 Oct. 6.
Enclosing a Policy and a letter from the Glass Company, remarking that it would be inconvenient for him to pay the £100 as required but that he can do so if the Trustees think it necessary; referring to a potential lawsuit with Longman's regarding a reprint (of his Life of Napoleon Buonaparte?) and noting he thinks the new edition will sell well; mentioning that "the pretext of disposing the manuscripts as Constable's property seems absurd."

Title:
Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.
The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Selznick, David O., 1902-1965. Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.

Returning the Assignation, saying he is willing to sign it as long as the "go hand in hand in any purpose for sale of the property." Discussing the potential sale of works to Cadell, noting that he might give £10,000 (for what he once offered £4,000) and approving of the sale; describing three nearly complete novels. Mentioning the possibility of traveling to "the warmer climes of Europe for the re-establishment of my health," and supposing that the Trustees of his estate will allow him "reasonable travelling expenses." Remarking that the Trustees should not be surprised if he needs personal money every so often because his expenses include his youngest son and daughter and that he also must maintain the decent appearance of appearing as an attaché of the government.

Remarking that it seems as if the Author of Waverly and his publishers are "on the point of breaking off" their connection, and taking the opportunity of "most earnestly soliciting" Lockhart's influence with the parties who manage the Authors works; noting also that it appears Sir Walter Scott's connection to the same publishers "may terminate from the same unfortunate cause" and remarking that he would consider it "the highest honour which my profession can attain to" if he were able to publish Scott's works "if it were only during an Interregnum."

Regarding an attempt by a creditor to obtain payment and Scott's need to seek protection from the Law, remarking that "Messrs. Abud's letter directing the extremities or diligence to be used against me lays me under the very unpleasing necessity of applying for the protection which the Law affords those who are willing but not able to pay their engagements." Recalling that "it was perfectly understood by all who entered into the late trust that I was to be left unmolested on condition of making such exertions as were in my power for extrication of these affairs."

The Fales Manuscript collection is made up of some 50,000 items, much of which was assembled by DeCoursey Fales from 1908-1966 and donated to NYU. The provenance of the materials is complicated, however. Following Fales' death in 1966, other collections and purchases were added into the Fales Manuscripts collection. We do not have a comprehensive listing of what Fales owned and what the library later purchased after his death. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, realia, ephemera, and other materials primarily about English and American authors from 1700 to the present. Autograph letter signed : [Abbotsford, near Melrose], to John Gibson, [1826 Oct. 7].
Remarking that the Trustees of his estate ought to accept Longmans offer (of £11,025 for his Life of Napoleon Buonaparte); noting that he must travel to London and Paris to complete his research and that this will delay publication but that "neither the time nor expense are agreeable circumstances but I must not economise upon either to the prejudice of literary reputation;" alluding to another work which "will be almost immediately ready for publication" (Chronicles of the Canongate?) and discussing its sale; referring again to his work on Napoleon, noting "I understand Hazlett (sic) is trying to cut in before with a life of Boney on which subject I shall only say he be d----d." With two postscripts and a note by John Gibson remarking that one of the postscripts refers to various creditors.
