Saying he has little fear of extricating himself from his financial affairs if the country remains at peace and there is no general crash; reporting that he refused an offer from Cadell of £6,000 for half of the property of the Waverly novels, remarking that it has proved beneficial to keep them until now; referring to a proposed sale of his manuscripts; mentioning that when he gave Constable some manuscripts (in 1823) it was under "promise of absolute secrecy" but that Constable broke this promise before the Bankruptcy.
