Stephen Spender's poetry was necessarily informed by the political situation of the world and the time he spent in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s. His poems, like the poet himself, are open without being obvious, and rather personal while retaining a world perspective. Later in his life, Spender wrote more prose and criticism than poetry, but it is as a young poet of the Auden school that he will be remembered.

Stephen Spender (1909-1995), writer, born in London and educated at University College, Oxford. He was mentored by W. H. Auden with whom he maintained a life-long friendship. He edited Horizon with Cyril Connolly from 1939-1941. Following WW II, Spender devoted his time to criticism, co-editing the magazine Encounter from 1953-1966. Spender also held a number of visiting professorships and lectureships at numerous distinguished American and English universities. He died on July 16, 1995 in London.

Stephen Spender was an English author, best known as one of the Oxford Generation poets. Born in London to an artistic family, he was educated at University College, Oxford, and began publishing poetry in his twenties. His early poetry was necessarily informed by the political situation of the world, and influenced by the time he spent in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s. His poems, like the poet himself, are open without being obvious, and rather personal while retaining a world perspective. Later in his life, Spender wrote more prose and criticism than poetry, and taught literature at numerous universities, but it is as a young poet of the Auden school that he will be remembered.
