Enclosing a letter from his brother-in-law Captain [Walter] Scott; discussing the Smiths, who were the architects and masons employed at Abbotsford, an noting that he has referred Captain Scott to Gibson about the matter; saying that he will assist Gibson in the matter if necessary, but remarking that "you will easily perceive that it will be painful for me to converse on any such subjects to Sir Walter Scott and therefore I ask you to spare me if you can."
