Consists of two folders. One folder contains 30 letters exchanged between Cabell and Hugh Walpole dating 1915-1925; there are 21 letters from Walpole to Cabell and 9 from Cabell to Walpole. The second folder contains a 1934 letter from Cabell to Samuel L. Gerstley of Philadelphia, and a 1923 letter from Cabell to Mr. Goldsmith of Dumbarton, Virginia.

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame.
