Swinnerton, a literary critic, editor, and author, was born in London and worked as an office boy and later as an editor for publishers. He began writing the first of his more than forty novels and twenty books of criticism in 1909. He was literary critic for the Evening news and The Observer. Swinnerton is best known for his novels, including Nocturne, Quadrille, Sanctuary, and Death of a Highbrow.

Frank Swinnerton was a British novelist, editor, and critic. Born in London, he began working as an office boy and clerk, and later took the position of editor at Chatto & Windus. He became a prolific novelist, and a key member of London's literary society; his reputation and popularity attracted many writers to Chatto & Windus, including friends Arnold Bennett and H.G. Wells. He was also an effective literary critic, and published many essays and several biographies. Throughout his long and productive career he was popular with readers, colleagues, and critics.
