During the War of 1812, Crittenden served as aide-de-camp to General Sam Hopkins, then in the 1st Kentucky Militia. In 1813, he received a commendation for his work during the Battle of Thames. Crittenden was elected Secretary of State of Kentucky in 1834. He served many terms on the Senate, and became governor of Kentucky in 1848. Crittenden campaigned against Kentucky's secession from the Union prior to the Civil War. He married three times, and had five sons and two daughters. Of his sons, one fought for the Union army, while another served the Confederacy. Crittenden died in Frankfort, Kentucky, on July 26, 1863.

John Jordan Crittenden was born on September 10, 1786, in Woodford County, Kentucky. Crittenden graduated from William and Mary then studied law under George M. Bibb. During the War of 1812, he served as an aide to General Samuel Hopkins and Governor Isaac Shelby. In 1829, Crittenden won a special election for a State house seat. He served in this capacity until 1832. He also served as Kentucky's Secretary of State in 1834. He proceded on to become U.S. Senator (1834-1841), which he resigned to become President William H. Harrison's Attorney General. He resigned this post when Tyler was elected President. Crittenden was then elected to an unexpired term in the U.S. Senate (1842-1848). During this time, he came out in opposition to Henry Clay. He resigned his seat to run for governor of Kentucky, in hopes of helping Zachery Taylor carry the state in the presidential election. In 1854, he was elected to the U.S. Senate for the forth time, serving until 1861. As the sectional crisis came to a head, he proposed the Crittenden Compromise in 1861. It was passed by the House of Representatives in July of that year. He died on July 26, 1863.

Green family. Papers, 1822-1900
Title:
Green family : papers, 1822-1900.
Papers primarily consisting of correspondence between family members of the Green family of Kentucky and the Ruggles family of New England. The letters give an excellent picture of the lives of people of good family but varying economic conditions; the attitudes of and toward women; health and medical conditions; manners and customs; and travel conditions by both land and water. Some significant information about slaves, weather conditions, religious views, dental problems, and attitudes toward dreams. Letters between Ellen Ruggles Green and her husband, Hector Green, are extremely affectionate for the period. Throughout there is some news and discussion of politics and current events, Cuba, Kanawha Salines, steamboats, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Boston, and Roxbury, Massachusetts, economic and mercantile conditions, education, and other matters pertaining to children. A letter written by Hector Green on the eve of the Civil War to his son, John Williams Green (later of the Orphan Brigade) clearly states the position of many Kentuckians on Abraham Lincoln and secession.

Papers of Lucy Smith Crittenden Thornton, 1856-1869.
The collection consists of 43 letters. Thirty of the 43 letters are from Lucy Smith Crittenden Thornton to her son Harry Innes Thornton, Jr. The remaining letters are written by other Thornton family members including (piece counts in parenthesis): Bessie Thornton (3), Sarah Thornton (2), Margaret Thornton Fall (1), Katherine Marshall Thornton (2), Harry I. Thornton, Jr. (3), and Ann Mary [last name unknown] (2). Even though the letters chiefly deal with family matters and the Thornton's social lives in San Francisco and Oakland, many of the letters also discuss the social conditions in the post-war South and family friends who left the South because of failing plantations. The Thorntons also comment upon the numerous "Yankees" with whom they have to socialize after the war. The family also mentions the freedmen in the South, Jefferson Davis, the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, and politics in California. The 3 letters by Harry I. Thornton, Jr., discuss his travels in the American southwest, his legal career, and specific court cases with which he was involved. Harry I. Thornton, Sr., is mentioned briefly in one letter.

Stuart, Alexander H. H. (Alexander Hugh Holmes), 1807-1891. Papers of Alexander H. H. Stuart and the related Stuart and Baldwin families [manuscript], 1776-1878 (bulk 1850-1861).
Title:
Papers of Alexander H. H. Stuart and the related Stuart and Baldwin families [manuscript], 1776-1878 (bulk 1850-1861).
The collection contains the political correspondence of Alexander H.H. Stuart, particularly from 1850-1853, when he served in Fillmore's cabinet and from 1857-1861, when he was in the Virginia State Senate. The Whig Party is a major topic. Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Also slavery, abolition, Southern conservative opposition to secession, Virginia elections of 1831, 1851, 1859, 1867, the aftermath of Nat Turner's rebellion, the use of statistics in government, the Confederate Congress, sectional reconciliation after the Civil War, the Readjustor controversy, political patronage, and internal improvements. Also mentioned are Revolutionary War pension claims, migration of free blacks to Liberia, affairs at the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Agency in 1851, California politics and Indians in 1851, the Tehuantepec Isthmus route, Iowa in 1851, San Francisco in 1854, New Orleans in 1861, West Virginia in 1861, the U.S.S. Princeton explosion, Dorothea Dix's efforts to establish hospitals for the mentally ill, building of the U.S. Capitol, the Virginia Central Railroad and the University of Virginia. Many letters convey local news in Staunton and Augusta County, Va., such as the development of Alum Springs, the establishment of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, smallpox cases and land sales and controversies in Virginia and Kentucky. Others refer to legal cases handled by Stuart, including suits involving the Bath Iron Works and Buffalo Forge, and the Wheeling Bridge. Several letters discuss family affairs including plans by a cousin to run a boarding house for young women in Athens, Greece. Only a few letters mention the Civil War and Reconstruction and include references to the military movements of Confederate general Robert S. Garnett. Topics in earlier Stuart and the related Baldwin family papers include ratification of the U.S. constitution, Jeffersonian party politics, political events during the administration of George Washington, Washington Academy, the University of Virginia and its honor system, Washington College, and William Wirt's biography of Patrick Henry. The papers also contain an architectural drawing of an unidentified house, an engraving of Alexander H.H. Stuart, insurance policies, stock certificates, indentures, wills, land plats, and speeches by Alexander H.H. Stuart. Military papers of Captain George M. Cochran, Jr., Quartermaster, 52nd Virginia Infantry, consist chiefly of requisitions and receipts. There are also two printed pamphlets, 1849, in French and German, on the potato blight.

Title:
Humphrey Marshall papers, 1827-1921 (bulk 1840-1872).
The collection consists of correspondence, a journal, a copybook, legal papers, speeches, and miscellaneous items related to Marshall's political and military career. Correspondence from the antebellum period concerns Marshall's political career with the Whig Party and the Know Nothings. Included are a variety of materials related to Marshall's service in the Mexican War, particularly his involvement at the Battle of Buena Vista. A small amount of correspondence from the Civil War discusses Marshall's service in the Confederate Army and his election to the Confederate Congress. Also included is Marshall's journal covering his journey to Mexico after the fall of Richmond in April 1865. The collection also includes a copybook from the time Marshall served as United States minister to China. The copied correspondence deals with China's Taiping Rebellion and American efforts at establishing trade with China and Japan. Other items include legal papers from the antebellum era as well as numerous incomplete speeches from both before and after the Civil War. A substantial amount of correspondence from Marshall's sons regards negative depictions of Marshall in historical works and is devoted to defending Marshall's reputation after his death. The collection also contains a 29-page handwritten autobiography by Supreme Court Justice John McLean.

Metcalfe, Thomas, 1780-1855. Thomas Metcalfe letters, 1824-1852.
Title:
Thomas Metcalfe letters, 1824-1852.
This collection consists of seven letters written to Thomas Metcalfe of Kentucky between 1824 and 1852. Letters were written by John C. Breckinridge, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, Henry Clay, Jr., John J. Crittenden, and Zachary Taylor. Of particular interest are the letters of Breckinridge, Crittenden, and Clay. The Clay letter, dated Sept. 9, 1831, concerns the congressional elections and presidential nominations. He mentions the Republicans and the Anti-Masonic party. Crittenden's letter, dated Jan. 8, 1849, discusses the "sectional meetings," chaired by Metcalfe, of the slaveholding states. Crittenden considers them "dangerous," but has confidence that Metcalfe will not let anything get out of hand. Breckinridge's 1852 letter is a defensive response to earlier correspondence from Metcalfe concerning Mr. Robinson's (John F. Robinson of Indiana) comments about Metcalfe. He thought Breckinridge conspired to defame him and called Breckinridge a "liar and scoundrel," the result of which was Breckinridge's decision to sever communications with Metcalfe.
