Written as a Senator from New Hampshire to Carroll, editor of The Patriot in Concord, New Hampshire. Carroll had once served as a clerk in Pierce's law office. Pierce speaks of the politics of the day, mentioning fellow statesmen Crittenden, Webster, Wright and Benton.

Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a Missouri Democrat who served as a senator from 1821 to 1851.
