John J. Crittenden papers : letters, 1816-1859.

Collection consists of five letters written by John J. Crittenden. The first document was written to Isaac Shelby on Sept. 3, 1816, requesting the artillery Shelby ordered for the troops be sent to Clarksville, Tn. The second letter was written to Judge Thomas Towles, dated August 19, 1829. It discusses legal fees, owed to Crittenden, by the Bank of Illinois for his representation of them in a court case. The third letter is dated Jan. 27, 1829, and is written to William S. Morgan. This document discusses Crittenden representation of Morgan in a land transaction. The fourth letter, written to Jefferson Davis, is dated March 1856. The letter's content is ambiguous, but mentions carefully destroying past letters. This letter was written during Crittenden's aborted attempt to gain the presidential nomination. The last document was written to E.H. Taylor in 1859, and concerns land transactions and taxation.
