Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841.
