These files document Governor John J. Crittenden's use of the governor's power and privilege to pardon convicts and to postpone and remit fines. Included are petitions for people convicted of a variety of offenses, from swearing and keeping a tippling house to horse stealing and importing slaves. Also included are a number of petitions requesting a pardon for two slaves sentenced to hang for their part in a failed attempt to escape to freedom in Ohio, which ended in an exchange of gunshots.
