Wallace Earle Stegner is an author.
John Wesley Powell was a geologist, ethnologist, and director of the United States Geological Survey; he was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1889.
Union Army major; explorer of the Grand Canyon; director of the U.D. Department of Ethnology and the U.S. Geological Survey; author of several books including "Exploration of the Colorado River."
John Wesley Powell was a geologist, ethnologist, and director of the United States Geological Survey. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1889.
John Wesley Powell, the first director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology (1879-1902), was professor of natural sciences at Illinois Wesleyan University from approximately 1865-1868. He was also appointed curator of the Illinois Natural History Society Museum, housed at Illinois State Normal University, where he became professor of geology in 1867. He remained in this latter capacity until 1872 when he departed the Illinois region to concentrate his efforts on further explorations of the West.
Powell, John Wesley (1834-1902), American ethnologist, geologist, explorer, and government administrator, known for his work as the first major classifier of Native American languages, as well as for his pioneering work as a geographical and geological surveyor of the Rocky Mountains.
Powell was a surveyor and geologist.
John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was a civil war veteran, botanist, geologist, and sociologist. He was born in Mount Morris, New York. He attended Wheaton and Oberlin College, though did not earn a degree from either. Powell joined the Union Army in 1861, and would eventually lose his right arm at the elbow at the Battle of Shiloh. Despite the injury, he continued to serve, and was promoted to major. In 1867, he led a small team of mountain men down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon for the first time in history. In 1870, Congress officially established a Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountains region with Powell in charge. This momentous event was just the beginning of Powell’s life as a surveyor. He became the second Director of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1881, and he continued leading surveys until 1894. In addition, Powell helped establish the National Geographic Society and the Geological Society of America, and served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
John Wesley Powell was born in New York in 1834. He studied natural history at Oberlin and Wheaton colleges. He lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 during the American Civil War. After the war he was a professor in Illinois. In 1867 he explored the Grand Canyon and Colorado River Basin. Powell was appointed Director of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879 and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1880. Powell published articles and reports on geography, geology, irrigation, ethnology, and his various surveys of the American West. He died in 1902.
Powell, John Wesley (1834-1902), American ethnologist, geologist, explorer, and government administrator, known for his work as the first major classifier of Native American languages, as well as for his pioneering work as a geographical and geological surveyor of the Rocky Mountains.
Powell was born on March 24, 1834, at Mount Morris, New York. When his family moved to Illinois, he made long solo voyages on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and became intensely interested in nature. After study at Oberlin and Wheaton colleges and service in the Union army during the American Civil War, he became a geology professor at Illinois Wesleyan College in 1865, and later he lectured at Illinois Normal University. In 1867 and 1868 he led geological expeditions into Colorado and Utah. The next year, with government backing, he explored and made a geological survey of the Green and Colorado river canyons. Between 1870 and 1879 he continued his survey of the Rocky Mountain region.
During Powell's travels he studied the Native Americans he encountered, and in 1879 he was appointed the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology. He also served (1881-92) as head of the U.S. Geological Survey, which under his direction became a highly effective organization. In 1891 he published the first complete classification and distribution map of the 58 language stocks of the Native Americans of the United States and Canada. He died in Haven, Maine, September 23, 1902.
Many monuments have been erected to Powell, but the most well known and documented in this collection is on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon . On a promontory 5000 feet above the waters of the Colorado River stands a monument of native undressed rock. On it is a bronze tablet dedicated May 20, 1918, which bears a portrait of Powell and is inscribed with the names of his exploring party. The tablet reads: "Erected by the Congress of the United States to -Maj. John Wesley Powell, first explorer of the Colorado River, who descended the river with his partly in row boats, traversing the gorge beneath this point, August 17, 1869, and again September 1, 1872."

Engelmann, George, 1809-1884. George Engelmann papers, 1831-1914.
Title:
George Engelmann papers, 1831-1914.
This is a collection of chiefly letters and botanical notebooks. Lecture notes and Engelmann's doctoral thesis are among the earliest papers. A series on herbaria and collectors includes plant exchange lists and other records concerning the Bernhardi and Engelmann herbaria and early plant collections coordinated by Engelmann in the western United States. The botanical notebooks are primarily notes on species from the botanical literature, herbarium specimens, and live plants in field and garden. Drawings and manuscripts by Engelmann, Arthur Schott, Paulus Roetter and others, and correspondence are found throughout. The correspondence (primarily letters to Engelmann) relates to botany, botanical surveys and expeditions sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and other U.S. government agencies. Letters discuss the following expeditions: the Emory expedition in New Mexico, the Fremont expedition in the Rocky Mountains and California, Hayden expedition on the upper Missouri River and Colorado, and the Nicollet, Powell, Simpson, Wheeler, Whipple and Wilkes expeditions. Many of the letters include descriptions of local and national politics. There is extensive correspondence with Smithsonian representatives.

Barus, Carl, 1856-1935. Carl Barus papers, 1869-1935,n.d.
Title:
Carl Barus papers, 1869-1935,n.d.
Consists of letters received, letterbooks (10 v.), notebooks, charts and graphs, formulas, manuscripts, lecture notes, a bibliography, business records, genealogical notes, speeches, and an autobiography (269 p.), dating from 1869 to 1935. The collection documents Barus's research for the United State Geological Survey, the Smithsonian Institution, and Brown University; his experiments and instruments, and scholarly discourse with other physicists. Correspondents include Edward Salisbury Dana, René de Saussure, Charles-Edouard Guillaume, Clarence King, Friedrich Wilhelm Georg Kohlausch, Samuel P. Langley, John Wesley Powell, Ogden N. Rood, Raymond W. Rossiter, Cenek Strouhal, Arthur Gordon Webster, and Eilhard Ernst Gustav Wiedemann. Numerous manuscripts and a number of letters contain analyses or discussions of experiments. Letters from de Saussure describe formulas for the resistance of air, particularly as applied to the rate at which an airplane falls. Letters from Langley discuss various experiments including a number in aerodynamics; the assembly of an aerodrome and a "railroad" cast-off for the aerodrome; thermodynamics; and physics apparatuses; as well as Barus's overall responsibilities at the Smithsonian Institution. Webster's letters are primarily responses and suggestions for changes to Barus's experiments on interferential induction balance and vectors. Rood recommended Barus to Clarence King for the position of physicist to the United States Geological Survey and was involved in providing the opportunity for Barus to be a candidate for a position at Brown University. Rood's letters describe his connections with Brown University faculty and trustees. Experiments with ions and nuclei are discussed in manuscripts and reviews of experiments. Correspondence for the planning of the International Congress of Radiology and Electricity in Brussels in 1909 is in the collection. There are papers related to the Old Wether Company, a sheep husbandry business incorporated in Kansas in 1882. Barus was an owner of this company.

Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh collection of photographs and drawings of the Colorado River region.
Title:
Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh collection of photographs and drawings of the Colorado River region.
The collection contains approximately 900 photographic prints, relief halftones, postcards, negatives, tintypes, and pen-and-ink drawings depicting the Colorado River region and other areas of the West. The early photographs are by E. O. Beaman, James Fennemore, John K. Hillers, photographers on the 1871 Powell expedition. The collection includes relief halftone prints of their photographs, evidently created for inclusion in Dellenbaugh's books on the Colorado River and the West. In addition, there are photographs by Dellenbaugh and other amateur photographers who traveled to the West, as well as by professionals William Henry Jackson and the Kolb Brothers. Subjects include the Grand, Glen, and Havasu Canyons, the Colorado and Green Rivers, Zion National Park, miscellaneous photographs of Arizona, California Colorado, and Utah, and portraits of expedition members and Native Americans. There are 24 drawings by Dellenbaugh which were used as illustrations in Romance of the Colorado and Breaking the West.

Carl G. Chafin manuscripts, 1969-1970.
Consists of photocopies of two typed, published manuscripts. The first manuscript, titled "Dateline Arizona: Six Letters to the Chicago Tribune in 1879 and 1880 by Adolphus Henry Noon," was edited by Chafin and was published in 1970. The second manuscript, titled "Was Powell First?," is Chafin's transcript of an address that was given by Otis R. Marston of Berkeley, California, before the Tenth Annual Arizona Historical Convention held in Tucson, Arizona, on May 3, 1969. Chafin published the address in his "Roadrunner" newspaper to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the departure of the first Powell expedition to the Grand Canyon from Green River, Wyoming, on May 24, 1869. Both manuscripts deal with various aspects of Arizona history as well as the history of the Colorado River.

Title:
Arizona Historical Foundation Microfilm Collection, 1812-1980 1870-1910 [microform].
The microfilm was collected from various sources over many years. The content reflects the research, publication, exhibitions, and special project interests of former AHF directors. Some of the reels are cataloged individually in the ASU Libraries catalog. The collection is divided into four series: Series I: Newspapers; Series II: Federal Documents; Series III: Personal Papers; Series IV: Other. Series I: Newspapers. The newspapers are arranged alphabetically, first by state or country location and then by the title of the newspaper. More than one newspaper may appear on a reel. In this case, it is arranged by the first title listed. The date ranges are approximate and some may be incomplete. When known, title changes are noted. Series II: Federal Documents. The majority of reels in this series are from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The NARA record group and microfilm call number are listed at the end of each entry. The reels are arranged alphabetically by agency or department, then by title of record. Series III: Personal Papers. This series contains pioneer biographies, personal journals, diaries, letter books, and correspondence. The source of the original, if known, is listed at the end of the entry. The pioneer biographies start the series and include documents, biographical summaries, and newspaper entries. The rest of the series is arranged alphabetically by last name. Series IV: Other. The series contains various topics and record types including business directories, territorial records, dissertations, articles, journals, historic building surveys and railway records. It is arrange by title or record type.

Wheeler family. Papers, 1809-1943.
Title:
Papers, 1809-1943.
Papers, 1809-1943, that belonged to General Joseph Wheeler consist of genealogical and biographical material, letters and correspondence, financial and business records, legal notes, military reports, speeches, printed material, maps, scrapbooks, and photographs. Additionally, the family subgroups contain a wide variety of papers, including letters, invoices, receipts, account books, legal instruments, real property documents, work contracts, and other material that testify to the family's business and legal activities. The collection documents primarily the public service career of Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) as a Confederate and, later, as a U.S. general, and, more fully, his almost-two decades as a U.S. Representative from Ala. The bulk of political papers are letters, telegrams, and postcards sent to him in Washington. Unfortunately, Wheeler did not regularly keep records of his responses until the late 1890s, and then only during the months he was on active duty. Within the Political/Post-political series of the Joseph Wheeler subgroup, the letters and correspondence cover such topics as patronage, a variety of U.S. Postal Service issues, military appropriations, claims and pension settlements, the development of Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River, Alabama politics, the free silver issue, and the Spanish-American and Civil wars, on which he wrote extensively. Other topics include tariff issues, elections, education, and African American soldiers' claims. The Joseph Wheeler papers also include letters and correspondence on personal and family matters as well as financial, business, and legal topics, the latter being generated by the extensive and complicated Wheeler real property lawsuits.

John Wesley Powell letters, 1890, 1894.
In a letter to S.S. McClure, 1890 October 23, Powell acknowledges receipt of McClure's request for an article but must decline as he is too busy and doesn't feel he could write equally well for boys and girls. In a second letter to S.S. McClure, 1894 November 6, Powell writes that he has just read Ida Tarbell's article on Napoleon which he notes "is not only graphic but its simplicity is high art. He also praises its "abundant illustrations."

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Martin J. Anderson collection, 1809-1995.
The material focuses on Anderson's research about early explorations of the Grand Canyon by watercraft. The 1869 and 1872 expeditions of J.W. Powell and his associates (Dellenbaugh, Thompson, and others) are the major historical emphasis of the collection. Post-Powell expeditions dealt with herein generally occurred before commercial river running through the Grand Canyon became practical and popular; therefore, most of the material covers the period 1869-1963, before the creation of Lake Powell.

Title:
Clarence King Papers, 1873-1894 1873-1894
An 1862 graduate of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale, Clarence King served as a volunteer member of the California Geological Survey from 1863-1867 before receiving an appointment to head the U.S. Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. With a rising reputation in the discipline, King helped organize the U.S. Geological Survey in 1879, becoming its first director, however he resigned in 1881 to enter into private work as a mining engineer and economic geologist. The King Papers consists of a dozen letters written by King to his colleague and friend Samuel Franklin Emmons, 1873-1894, that are revealing of their personal friendship as well as of the politics of the early organization and management of the U.S. Geological Survey.
