In Union Army during Civil War. Wounded at Fredericksburg 1862. Transferred to Veterans Reserve Corps and served at Rock Island Military Prison. After the war, was topographer with J.W. Powell on 2nd Colorado River expedition.

Francis Marion Bishop was a topographer and cartographer with John Wesley Powell's second exploration expedition of the Colorado River. He served in the Civil War, moving ranks from corporal to commander. He attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
