This collection primarily contains secondary source materials related to works by or about John Wesley Powell and the Powell Collection of Pueblo Pottery at the University. Journal articles comprise the bulk of the collection; extracts from books are also included with some written by Powell but most written by other researchers. There are also documents and publications for works commemorating Powell's Grand Canyon expeditions, newspaper articles about those trips and his relation to Illinois Wesleyan, and photographs and illustrations of Powell, his associates and their explorations. There are also correspondence files from scholars seeking information from the Tate Archives or offering information about Powell and his associates. Emma Dean was born in Michigan in 1834, the child of English immigrants who owned a mercantile operation in Detroit. Like other strong-hearted wives of officers, she followed her husband John Wesley Powell in his postings at Shiloh and thereafter, volunteered in the hospitals that surrounded the battlefields.
