This collection consists of copies of 71 images of and about John Wesley Powell, obtained mostly from U.S. Geological Survey photograph collections, for Cline Library display purposes. The images are of: Powell, his family, and associates; Native Americans from his role of ethnographer; the exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers and surrounding lands; maps of his river route and geographic area; illustrations from his 1895 Canyons of the Colorado; and 1968 repeat photography (photo matches) of some of Powell and his photographers's views, by Hal G. Stephens and Eugene M. Shoemaker, published as In the Footsteps of John Wesley Powell: An Album of Comparative Photographs of the Green and Colorado Rivers, 1871-72 and 1968.

Emma Dean was born in Michigan in 1834, the child of English immigrants who owned a mercantile operation in Detroit.
