Clark, Henry Grafton, 1814-1892. Papers, 1816-1899.
Title:
Papers, 1816-1899.
The collection details the career of an eminent Boston physician of the mid-19th century; Clark served as surgeon at Mass. General Hospital for many years and helped to contain the cholera epidemic of 1848-9. He was largely responsible for defining the difference between typhus and typhoid fever. Clark was active, too, in the political and cultural affairs of the city as shown in correspondence from distinguished fellow-citizens. Printed matter includes tickets to medical school lectures, diplomas, documents issued as City Physician, letters to newspapers, and occasional verse written for St. Andrew's Lodge and other fraternal organizations. Earlier and later papers in the collection relate to his father, Henry Clark (1780-1873) and son, the architect Henry Paston Clark who published, in 1893, a memorial tribute to his father.

Niles, Bertha Olmsted, 1834-1926. Diary, 1857-1868.
Title:
Diary, 1857-1868.
Consists of five distinct sections related to different activities and periods of Bertha Olmsted Niles' life. The first, dating from Sept. 17, 1857 to August 1858, is a diary of her journey in Europe and of her ventures upon her return to the United States late in 1858. While in Europe, she visited sites and art exhibitions in England, Scotland, and France. In 1858 she mentioned visits to Central Park and noted that she filed Frederick Olmsted's letters, arranged pamphlets, read her brother's manuscripts, and put up curtains. The second and fourth sections list personal expenses, many of which were for clothing. The third section records the number of meals that Niles prepared for individuals visiting her and her husband. The final section dates from 1862 to 1870 and lists religious services that Niles attended, titles of sermons, preachers (mostly her husband), and thoughts of a religious nature. She also jotted down income her husband earned from preaching sermons in 1864 and 1865.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
