Elizabeth Stevenson (1919-1999), American writer and first women to win the Bancroft Prize (1956) for HENRY JAMES: A BIOGRAPHY. She began her Emory career in 1960 as a secretary, a position she held for 14 years before taking a faculty appointment in the Institute of the Liberal Arts, where she taught for 12 years. She is now Candler Professor of American Studies Emeritus.

Elizabeth Tyler Stevenson was a resident of Montgomery, Ala., graduated from the Margaret Booth School in 1917, and attended Mt. Holyoke College, Mass.
The Margaret Booth School was an exclusive girls school founded by native Montgomerian Margaret Booth. The school operated from 1914 until its closure in 1953.
