Fales Manuscript Collection, ca. 1700-2000
Title:
Fales Manuscript Collection ca. 1700-2000
The Fales Manuscript collection is made up of some 50,000 items, much of which was assembled by DeCoursey Fales from 1908-1966 and donated to NYU. The provenance of the materials is complicated, however. Following Fales' death in 1966, other collections and purchases were added into the Fales Manuscripts collection. We do not have a comprehensive listing of what Fales owned and what the library later purchased after his death. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, realia, ephemera, and other materials primarily about English and American authors from 1700 to the present. There are special strenths in the Victorian, Edwardian, English 1890s, and Transition Period writers.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Emlyn Williams papers, 1941-1986
Title:
Emlyn Williams papers 1941-1986
Emlyn Williams was an actor, director, novelist, essayist, and playwright best known for NIGHT MUST FALL and THE CORN IS GREEN. Born in 1905 in Mostyn, Flintshire, Wales, where most of his family and friends mined coal, Emlyn Williams was inspired by a sympathetic teacher to pursue a theatrical and literary career. He acted in many plays and films, and also directed the movie THE LAST DAYS OF DOLWYN (1949) which marked the film debut of his fellow Welshman Richard Burton. From the early 1950s onward Williams toured in a one-person show in which he portrayed Charles Dickens. In his last years Williams was involved in setting up a film version of his novel HEADLONG. Emlyn Williams died on Sep. 25, 1987, at the age of 81. The Emlyn Williams papers consist of correspondence, clippings, photographs, and various materials relating to the one-person show in which Williams portrayed Charles Dickens. The material relating to Williams' Dickens impersonation dates back to his earliest appearances in the role in 1951, and includes numerous playbills, clippings, press releases, and other documents. Most of the correspondence in this collection is with Robert Crawley and pertains to a proposed film version of Williams' novel HEADLONG. After Williams' death the film was eventually produced under the title KING RALPH (1991), starring John Goodman.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Ley, J. W. T. (James William Thomas), 1879-1943. Typed letters signed (17) : Newport, Monmouthshire, to Edward Wagenknecht, 1929-1943.
Title:
Typed letters signed (17) : Newport, Monmouthshire, to Edward Wagenknecht, 1929-1943.
Thanking him for a review of his annotated edition of Forster's "The Life of Charles Dickens, "(1928); arguing that a scholar's nationality necessarily colors his perspective on his subject; disagreeing with Wagenknecht's view that there is no place for patriotism in the modern world, and criticizing Ghandi's pacifism; advising Wagenknecht to write without adhering to a specific method or school; saying he has met the "tramp poet" William Henry Davies; arguing that Mrs. Dickens lacked the spiritual and mental strength to be a proper companion for Dickens, that Wilkie Collins was "Dickens's bad influence," and that Dickens never had an affair with Ellen Ternan; explaining (in 1938) that he is sympathetic to Germany because it is wrong to punish the children for the sins of the father; and (in 1942) hailing the military alliance between the United States and Britain, saying, "Well, hands across the sea--England and America; the dream of all good men on both sides for long long years. How Dickens would have welcomed it ... I'll tell you just this. The people of this country have proved that they are worthy of being your allies. No doubt you have read much, but it would be almost impossible for any pen to tell the story of the fortitude and determination of the common people of this old country. No, Sir, we are not effete. There is no degeneracy here"; and disagreeing with but respecting Wagenknecht's Quaker views. With a typed letter signed from Ley's son, Kenneth J. Ley, dated Clifton, Bristol, 19 October 1943, informing Wagenknecht of his father's death.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
