George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was an English artist, caricaturist and illustrator. In 1811 Cruikshank gained fame with a series of political caricatures he created for the periodical The scourge, a monthly expositor of imposture and folly. Cruikshank published political cartoons until 1825 and began illustrating books in 1820. He is thought to have illustrated over 850 books for adults and children, including works by Dickens, Ainsworth, Thackeray, and the Grimm brothers. He also published books on his own, most notably The comic almanack (1835-1853). In 1847 he became interested in the temperance movement, an interest that is apparent in much of his later artistic work.

George Cruikshank, son of caricaturist Isaac Cruikshank, was born in London, England in 1792 and died there in 1878. He began his career as a social/political caricaturist in 1811. Between 1819 and 1821, Cruikshank produced a series of colored etchings followed by a collection of comic stories in four volumes. He was considered the foremost illustrator of such classics as Grimms' Fairy Tales, Scott's novels and Dicken's Oliver Twist. In 66 years of work, Cruikshank illustrated more than 200 books. His work, wrote one reviewer of a biography of Cruikshank, "recorded, commented on, and satirized his times to such an extent that they have frequently been used to represent the age."

George Cruikshank, born in London on September 27, 1792 to a Scottish painter, Isaac Cruikshank, and his wife, was an English humorist and illustrator. Briefly educated at Edgeware, he is considered by some to be one of the best humorists that Britain ever produced. Cruikshank began his career as a political satirist but moved on to become a book illustrator. He also had a late interest in oil painting, enrolling in the Academy Schools as a student at the age of sixty-four. In his lifetime he created nearly 10,000 prints, illustrations, and plates. His early drawings often featured attacks on Britain’s royal family. In the 1820s his preoccupation with political caricature waned, however, as he became more interested in theatrical caricatures and book illustrations. Cruikshank produced some of his best-known work for Charles Dickens, beginning with Sketches by Boz, (1836) and reaching an apex with Oliver Twist, Oliver Twist, (1838). Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Pilgrim’s Progress, Paradise Lost, and seven novels by William Harrison Ainsworth were among other works he illustrated.

Cruikshank married Mary Ann Walker (1807-1849) on October 16, 1827. Two years after her death, on March 7, 1851, he married Eliza Widdison. Later in his life, Cruikshank supported the temperance movement, creating prints illustrating the evils of alcohol. Collections of his works are in the British and the Victoria and Albert museums. George Cruikshank died February 1, 1878.

Historical Background

George Cruikshank, born in 1792, was a British caricaturist and a book illustrator in the 19th century. He was known for his etchings that portrayed the royal family and leading politicians. He also illustrated books, including some of Charles Dickens' works. Cruikshank was a renowned caricaturist and was one of England's most popular satirists. He died in 1878.

From the guide to the George Cruikshank etchings, 1822-1826, (Special Collections and Archives, University of California, Irvine Libraries)

George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist, illustrator and engraver.

George Cruikshank was born in Bloomsbury, England in 1792. Cruikshank was taught art by his father, Isaac Cruikshank who was a caricaturist.

Cruikshank was influenced by English political cartoonist, James Gillray and Cruikshank finished several of Gillray’s pieces that were left unfinished at the time of his death in 1815. Several years later in 1820, Cruikshank received attention for his caricatures of Queen Caroline’s trial. Cruikshank regularly criticized what he saw as problems of contemporary society including the slave trade, the criminal code as well as French fashion and the French lifestyle in the work, Life in Paris (printed for John. Fairburn, 1822).

Cruikshank contributed to magazines such as Bentley's Miscellany and Ainsworth's Magazine and founded Wits . He also illustrated several books including Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist (1838). In the 1840s, Cruikshank became active with the Temperance movement and illustrated materials promoting this campaign.

George Cruikshank died in 1878.

From the guide to the George Cruikshank Collection, 1819-1866, (Special Collections Research Center, Syracuse University Libraries)

George Cruikshank was born on 27 September 1792 in London. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s and George started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. Isaac Robert Cruikshank, George's older brother, also followed in the family business as a caricaturist and illustrator. George's early work was caricature; but in 1823, at the age of 31, Cruikshank started to focus on book illustration. His first major work was Pierce Egan's Life in London (1821), and he also illustrated Charles Dicken's Oliver Twist (1846). He achieved early success collaborating with William Hone in his political satire The Political House That Jack Built (1819).

In the late 1840s, Cruikshank's focus shifted from book illustration to his obsession with temperance and anti-smoking. He supported, lectured to, and supplied illustrations for the National Temperance Society and the Total Abstinence Society among others. Works such as The Bottle (1847) and The Drunkard's Children (1848) are examples of his efforts to encourage temperance. Cruikshank was made vice president of the National Temperance League in 1856.

Cruikshank developed palsy in later life and his work declined in quality. He died on 1 February 1878 and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson (1828-1896), physician and crusader for preventative medicine, served as executor for the Cruikshank estate.
