Noted American historian from Massachusetts who traveled the Oregon Trail and published extensively on early America.

Francis Parkman, historian, was born in Boston and educated at Harvard, his father's alma mater. Samuel Parkman was a Unitarian pastor who founded The Parkman Professorship of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care in The Cambridge Theological School. In 1846, 2 years after graduating from college, Parkman travelled through the Western prairies studying Native Americans. On his return to the East he published a series of papers on his findings in The (New York) Knickerbocker magazine, later cumulated into two volumes. Parkman also wrote several multivolume works on native peoples in America and Canada including History of the conspiracy of Pontiac (1851).

Francis Parkman, historian, was born in Boston, Mass., graduated from Harvard and Harvard Law, and had a strong interest in the American West. After a trip into the Wyoming Territory and exploring the California and Oregon Trail in 1846, Parkman began writing serial installments of The Oregon Trail (published in Knickerbocker Magazine, Feb. 1847-Feb. 1849), one of his most famous works. Parkman would continue to write many volumes of history, mostly about American Indians, the West, the French in America, and the growth of the United States. During most of Parkman's life, he suffered from weak eyes, blinding headaches, and a number of other maladies, but he was always determined to push himself physically to challenge his maladies.
