Among his many contributions to American letters, he published and promoted works by Irving, Cooper, Hawthorne, Poe, and many others; opened a London branch, becoming the first American publisher to do so; and published Putnam's Monthly Magazine, which set a new standard for American literary journalism. He also played a leading part in establishing the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
