Hart, Gary, 1936-. Gary Hart Papers, 1970-1987.
Title:
Gary Hart Papers, 1970-1987.
Senator Hart maintained offices in Washington, D.C. and in Colorado. With sizeable staffs in separate offices many files overlap. This is to be expected in large collections of Congressional papers and the object in organizing and arranging Senator Hart's Papers has been to facilitate access without trying to combine every file of like information which would have been long and costly. When doing research in these papers ALWAYS CONSULT EACH SECTION FOR WHATEVER INFORMATION YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR. Please note also that dates (i.e. 1982 84) are assigned to most folders. Many folders contain upwards of one hundred papers and the dates are intended only as a broad marker of the time period. Gary Hart (born in 1936), a graduate of Yale University's schools of Divinity and Law, first gained national visibility while directing George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign. Colorado voters elected Hart to the U.S. Senate in 1974 and narrowly re-elected him in 1980. He soon began a "dark horse" try for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, placing second to Walter Mondale in 1984. Hart retired from the Senate in 1986 to unsuccessfully pursue the 1988 nomination, disbanding the campaign organization by mid-1987. The collection includes Senate papers and records from Hart's Washington and Colorado offices, plus diverse materials generated for the Senator's Colorado and national election efforts.

Title:
Alfred Lacey Hough Papers, 1861-1924 (bulk 1869-1889).
The papers are divided into several categories: family correspondence (1861-1883); military correspondence and military papers, orders, and memoranda (1873-1900); related family materials; and oversize certificates, commissions, and promotions (1855-1904). The family correspondence includes letters between A.L. Hough and his wife, Mary J. Hough, during Hough's career as a volunteer and regular army officer in the Union and post-Civil War Army. Referenced in this correspondence are family information and matters concerning his Civil War activities, the California Campaign of 1869, the Sioux War of 1876-77, and the Meeker Massacre. There are a number of letters to Hough from prominent U.S. Army Officers regarding the career of George H. Thomas, of whom Hough was a protégé. Hough's correspondence to General and Mrs. Thomas are within Hough's military correspondence. Augmenting the family and military correspondence is a military autobiography of Hough's career from 1861 to 1880. Appended to the collection are the Memoirs (1924) of A.L. Hough's son, Charles Merrill Hough, a federal judge. Charles M. Hough's memoirs discuss his parents' backgrounds and lives, while shedding light on his version of growing up in the military. An oversize folder holds the military commissions of A.L. Hough, tracking his military career.

Johnson, Arthur C. (Arthur Chilion), 1874-1937. Arthur C. Johnson papers, 1887-1937.
Title:
Arthur C. Johnson papers, 1887-1937.
The Arthur C. Johnson papers consist of correspondence, diaries, as well as selected business documents, photographs, scrapbooks, published writings and book manuscript. The body of the collection is a series of 45 diaries spanning the years 1885-1937. The correspondence includes approximately 450 Johnson letters, primarily to his mother in Colorado, written during his army career ( in the Philippine War), his world travels as a free-lance reporter, and his life in Washington, 1902-1915, where he served as secretary to his uncle, Senator Thomas M. Patterson (Colorado) and as an enrolling clerk in the House of Representatives. The collection is valuable for Arthur Johnson's observations of national figures between 1902-1915, and of Colorado activities from 1915-1937. His knowledge of Colorado ranching illuminates the cattle industry particularly during a period of drought and depression. His diaries and letters, from 1931-1936, contain a remarkably close account of middle class life during the Great Depression and, as the Johnson family was connected by blood, friendship or business ties with a large number of Denver educational, social and business figures, his papers contain useful information on his personal, cultural, social and domestic life during this time. Arthur C. Johnson was a Washington correspondent, attorney, and owner and publisher of Denver's Record Stockman. He was also a war correspondent, and later, a political commentator. In addition, he was secretary for his uncle, Thomas M. Patterson. His collection contains correspondence, diaries, business papers, photographs and published writings, 1887 to 1937.
