Mary Rippon collection, 1874-1936 (bulk 1877-1936).

The collection consists of papers, correspondence, and memorabilia of Mary Rippon (1850-1935). Mary Rippon was invited by President Joseph A. Sewall to become the first female professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1877. During her 57-year career at the University, Rippon taught French and German, and served as the informal "Dean of Women" in University matters relating to women. A major presence in Boulder's literary community, she raised funds for the University's library and the Boulder Public Library, and founded the Boulder Fortnightly Club. The collection includes works by Rippon, and other kept collectibles. A restricted portion of the collection has a biography written by Rippon's grandson Wilfred Rieder.

Mary Rippon (1850-1935) was born in Lisbon, Illinois. After completing high school, Rippon unsuccessfully sought higher education, which was unavailable to women during this time in the United States.
