One of the earliest pictures of Old Main, taken just after completion in 1877. Note construction debris around the building. Roof appears to be slate. Fancy wrought iron work on roof ridges, iron covers on chimneys all were removed early on; slate roof replaced by cedar shingles in the winter of 1877-1878.

The chemistry building was built in 1898, enlarged in 1906, and demolished in 1972.

J. Raymond Brackett was professor of English and Greek at the University of Colorado during the first half of the 20th century. He came to the Boulder campus in 1884 and became the University's first Dean of Liberal Arts in 1892 and later served as Dean of the Graduate School. He was a skilled and ardent photographer who made an enduring contribution through his photographs of the University which have been used extensively in early publications and appeared frequently in contemporary histories such as "Glory Colorado" and "Proud Past--Bright Future," the history of the College of Engineering by Siegfried Mandel and Margaret Shipley.

Groundbreaking for this building, the first church structure in Boulder, was in the fall of 1866. The building was dedicated on 10 July 1870. After the congregation moved into its new home across Pine Street, the original building was torn down and was replaced by the Carnegie Library.

The railroad came to Ward in July of 1898. The first addition to the school was built in 1896 (a second addition completed in the fall of 1898 has not yet been built).

Although these negatives were in the possession of Martin Parsons and have Sturtevant's name added to them, they appear to be by Professor Raymond Brackett.

The Boulder Congregational Church was organized on Sunday, 17 July 1864, in a cottonwood grove near the Valmont butte. Ground was broken in late 1866 for the first church structure erected in Boulder, on the northwest corner of 12th (later renamed Broadway) and Pine streets; that building was dedicated on 10 July 1870. That meeting place was replaced by the building across Pine Street on the southwest corner with Broadway, which was dedicated in January of 1908.
In June of 1911, J. Edward LeBosquet was the pastor of the church. The church parsonage was located at 1128 Pine St. J. Raymond Brackett, the photographer, was a professor of English literature at the University of Colorado, and was a member of the Congregational Church. Brackett lived nearby, at 2455 12th St. (Broadway).

According to Phyllis Smith's A Look at Boulder (1981, p. 19), Samuel M. Breath arrived in Boulder in June of 1859, and helped build a double log cabin on what later was (in 1981) the northeast corner of 11th and Pearl streets. Boulder pioneer George F. Chase arrived in Boulder in July 1859 with oxen; according to Schoolland (p. 53), Chase had travelled from Maine, via Clinton, Iowa.
