The collection consists of personal (1896-1938), business (1898-1929) and political (1900-1936) correspondence, legal papers (1900-1917), U.S. Tariff Commission information (1917-1928), early political organizations in Colorado, Senate campaign and career material (1930-1936). Early family items comprise correspondence among family members, genealogy, Harvard University course work and memorabilia. Other later items include correspondence to Costigan and his wife, Mabel, after his retirement and death (1937-1951), information on women's club activities, photographs, scrapbooks, printed matter and personal keepsakes. The collection contains 52 linear ft. of law books and government publications.

Edward Prentiss Costigan (1874-1939) was born in King William County, Virginia and moved with his family to Ouray, Colorado at the age of three. He studied law in Utah and was admitted to the bar in Salt Lake City in 1897. He graduated from Harvard in 1899 and opened a law office in Denver the following year.
