Philip Henry Sheridan was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. A native of Albany, N.Y., Sheridan graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1853 and subsequently served with the 4th U.S. Infantry in the Pacific Northwest. Sheridan served predominantly in staff positions during the early years of the Civil War but was promoted by General U.S. Grant in 1863 to commander of cavalry, Army of the Potomac. In 1864, he led the raid on Richmond, Virginia, that resulted in the death of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart. Grant later appointed Sheridan military governor of Louisiana and Texas, a position from which he was removed the following year due to his severity as an administrator.
