Stanley, David Sloane, 1828-1902

Staneley was born (1828) in Chester, Ohio; graduated from West Point (1852); served at various army posts (1852-1861) in Texas, California, Kansas, and Arkansas; and fought in the Civil War, with major engagements at Corinth (1862), the Atlanta Campaign, and in Tennessee (1864). Stanley was mustered out in 1866, served in Indian campaigns in the West, and led an expedition (1873) to the Yellowstone River. He retired from the army in 1892 and died in Washington, D.C. in 1902. His military promotions were to captain (March 1861), to brigadier general (Sept. 1861), and to major general (Nov. 1862).

David Sloane Stanley (1828-1902) of Ohio, studied medicine and practiced briefly as a country doctor before entering West Point in 1848. After graduation, Stanley served as lieutenant with the 2nd Dragoons on a mission from Fort Smith, Arkansas to San Diego, California to survey potential routes for a Pacific railroad. During the Civil War, he was appointed Major General of the Regular Army of Volunteers and Chief of Cavalry in the U.S. Army of the Tennessee.

David Sloane Stanley graduated from West Point in 1852 and was commissioned in the 2nd United States Dragoons. In 1853 he accompanied an expedition traveling from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to San Diego, California. He was promoted to general during his service with the Union Army in the Civil War. In 1872 and 1873 he commanded expeditions that explored the Yellowstone area in search of a feasible route for a railroad.

David Sloane Stanley was born in 1828 in Cedar Valley, Ohio, the son of John B. and Sarah (Peterson) Stanley. Although he studied medicine, he decided instead on a military career. He graduated from West Point in 1852 and served in Texas, California, and Kansas. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War, being wounded several times, and taking part in numerous campaigns. At the end of the war he was promoted to colonel and served in the Sioux and Cheyenne wars in the west. In 1872 he was in command of the military escort to the railroad survey parties along the Yellowstone River. In 1884 he was appointed commander of the Dept. of Texas and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1892. After his retirement, he headed the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C., from 1893 to 1898. He died 13 Mar. 1902.
