President of American Steel and Wire Co., a director of U.S. Steel Corp., and President of the Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, Ohio) from 1913-1927. Palmer had an intense interest in the Civil War and acquired an extensive collection of material relating not only to the war, but to ante-bellum life, slavery, and the life of Abraham Lincoln as well. This collection is one of several Palmer collections relating to the Civil War owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society.
